Lookout Security & Antivirus takes a broad-spectrum approach to mobile security, monitoring everything from malware attacks to identity theft.

Pros

Scanning for threats: Lookout automatically checks new downloads and app updates for problems. Its scans are not the snappiest, but once they've been completed, the app presents a scrolling list of its findings. You can also initiate a scan from the app's security screen.

Security monitoring: Lookout offers several tiers of protection. The free version of the app actively scans for malware and offers basic tools for locating a lost device.

A Premium subscription runs $2.99 per month and checks which personal information your installed apps can access, such as contacts or your device's motion and environmental sensors. You also get expanded tools for locating a lost phone, alerts when a company you have an app associated with is hacked, monitoring for suspicious email and websites, and a VPN for secure network connections.

Lookout's $9.99 Premium Plus monthly subscription offers features not normally associated with Android antivirus software. Its monitoring service can detect whether your personal or financial information is on the Web, help identify where the leak came from, and offer guidance on how to recover from the leak. The plan offers insurance for covering the cost of recovering your identity. The service also monitors social media for potentially damaging personal information.

Helpful navigation: The app's interface is easy to navigate, with most security tools a swipe or two away.

Cons

Lacks third-party test scores: Lookout does not participate in third-party testing by AV-Test or AV-Comparitives, independent security and antivirus research firms that test the effectiveness of antivirus software. While many antivirus companies score well on the tests, it's difficult to judge Lookout's effectiveness without the scores.

Bottom Line

Lookout's approach to mobile security extends beyond what most other antivirus apps provide. In addition to antivirus and device protection, Lookout monitors for data breaches and identity theft at a price that competes with that of monitoring services like Lifelock or Complete ID. If you are looking for full-service malware and fraud monitoring, Lookout's security app for Android is hard to beat.
