Used LockDown Browser for iOS?
Editors’ Review
LockDown Browser is a customized and controlled web browser that restricts device activity during online educational examinations within supported learning management systems. Once an exam session begins, the browser strictly limits navigation, blocks access to external applications, and permanently disables system-level functions such as unauthorized screen capture and printing.
LockDown Browser operates in conjunction with Respondus Monitor for recorded proctoring when enabled by the institution. It uses App Self-Lock (Autonomous Single App Mode) to confine the device to a single assessment interface. The browser connects directly with platforms such as Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, and Brightspace through institution-configured exam links.
Protecting every exam session
During an active session, LockDown Browser automatically applies system-wide navigation restrictions that prevent opening new tabs, accessing other URLs, or switching to different applications. Standard keyboard shortcuts are disabled, and system functions such as screenshots and printing remain inactive until submission. The interface takes out the normal browser controls and replaces them with a managed exam layout that is controlled by the settings of the connected learning management system.
When enabled, Respondus Monitor activates the device camera to record video and audio throughout the assessment. The recording begins at exam launch and stores captured data within the institution’s assessment system. Pre-exam prompts may require identity verification steps, including facial positioning and environmental scans. The institution sets the exam configuration, which defines the monitoring parameters, recording rules, and review access.
App Self-Lock restricts system navigation and blocks multitasking until the exam session ends. The browser communicates directly with supported platforms, including Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, and Brightspace, using institution-issued exam links. However, feature access is determined by institutional configuration, meaning device eligibility and proctoring activation depend entirely on the specific assessment environment settings. This ensures a controlled, high-stakes testing experience for all students.
Pros
- Enforces single-application exam control
- Disables screenshots and printing during sessions
- Supports webcam recording through Respondus Monitor
- Direct integration with major learning management systems
Cons
- Feature access determined by institutional configuration
Bottom Line
Controlled assessment platform
LockDown Browser functions as a restricted assessment browser integrated with institutional learning systems. It also enforces single-application exam control, blocks multitasking, and disables device-level capture tools. The application records exam sessions when Monitor is enabled. It does not provide independent browsing, document editing tools, or integrated study utilities outside the specific assessment framework. This ensures a controlled and secure testing environment.
