Google News -- the company's replacement for Google News & Weather -- is designed to help you keep up with the news you care about from sources you trust.
Pros
Designed to help you find trusted news: The new Google News app replaces the company's Google Play Newsstand and Google News & Weather apps and is designed to provide readers with a fresh and fuller look at news and events by using AI to monitor, organize, and display information in real time.
Helpfully organized: The app breaks out news into five-top stories at the moment; a deeper look at events spanning U.S., world, business, tech, entertainment, and sports events; and topics and sources you are following, including local sources. The app strives to offer a range of news sources to allow you to get a fuller picture of a story. For example, tap the small colorful rectangle on the right side of a top story to get different perspectives and context on the news. (On Android, you can also add a News widget to your home screen to cycle top stories.)
Depends on AI: The app uses a visual approach Google is calling "Newscasts," that relies on AI to present a fuller view of news, pulling in a mix of articles, videos, and quotes for an individual topic. In any section, you can scroll down to view more stories selected by Google's AI, save a story to read later, or share it. Google said the service learns from your reading activities and tunes your feed to your interests.
Follow and subscribe to news publications: You can follow news sources, and with Google's new Subscribe with Google service, subscribe to publications. The service manages your subscriptions across all your devices using your Google account, giving you access in Google News (both app and the web), in Google search, and on publisher websites. If you already have a subscription to a publication using Google's service, you can activate your account in Google News to view content in the app.
Part of the Google News Initiative: Google's initiative is designed to support the news industry, elevate quality journalism, and combat misinformation through funding and a variety of collaborations. The initiative is, in part, a response to the public's growing lack of confidence in the ability of tech companies and news organizations to present trustworthy information.
Cons
Can't sort into topics: News feeds display a mix of topics you are interested in, but you can't sort or arrange feeds by a specific topic -- such as baseball or politics.
Bottom Line
Replacing the Google News & Weather app, the new Google News app is designed to provide an unfiltered view of events from a range of trusted news sources, Google says.
