Editors' Review

dSLR cameras undoubtedly produce the highest quality images available. AfterFocus claims to bring the high quality creative photography of these devices to the world of Android. The reality is that nothing can replace the dSLR camera, but this app does a great job of trying.

At almost 7 megabytes, this app takes a little longer to download than other, far simpler applications. It may take a while on 3G networks, but it is worth the slight inconvenience. AfterFocus opens quickly and instantly greets the user with a beginner's tutorial. The convenience of this feature is great because it makes the software seem like second nature. First you need to select from two options: you can load a picture from the gallery or take a new picture. If you choose to take a new picture, you are immediately taken to the stock Android camera. Once the picture is taken or selected from the gallery it will open on the editing screen. Intuitive gestures enable the user to select areas that will remain in focus, and to deselect areas that will blur. This app does a good job of finding objects within the image for selection and editing. There is also an intermediate selection that will put the focus at halfway for a gradual progression. The app features the usual gamut of filters such as black and white, sepia, and vintage. Other features enable the user to create a motion blur effect in the background, or delete color in the background.

For users who wish to create high-quality images on their mobile device, AfterFocus seems to be a smart pick. It is full of useful features and effects that will fool the eye into believing your photos were taken with an expensive camera. The image quality is great and the application functions flawlessly.
