Pros

Three ways to sign in: In this era of concern over Facebook's privacy practices, it's comforting to know that we can sign in to TripAdvisor using not only a Facebook account but also a Google or TripAdvisor account. If you're new to TripAdvisor, it's easy to create an account.

Easy to navigate: The default home page enables you to search for a destination directly by tapping the magnifying glass on the top right; tapping the Where To drop down, which brings up popular destinations near and far; tapping a host of categories, such as Hotels, Vacation Rentals, Flights, Restaurants, Things to Do, and more; or by tapping one of the Popular Destinations tiles in the carousel at the bottom.

My Trips on the bottom rail takes you to trips you've saved; Alerts takes you to notifications, such as when a flight you're interested in drops in price; and Me is your main hub for writing reviews, your timeline of visited cities, your previous bookings, downloaded cities, and more.

Searches 200-plus hotel and airfare booking sites: With so many sites searched, you can be confident that TripAdvisor is serving you the best deals around.

500 million traveler-reviewed restaurants, hotels, and tours: New to a city and not sure which hotel to choose? Tap any hotel in TripAdvisor and see detailed photos, a description, a list of amenities, contact info, and trustworthy reviews from fellow travelers. If you lose interest, the app shows you other accommodation options nearby. Or tap any restaurant to see photos, contact info, and reviews.

Offline viewing: You can save on data-roaming charges when traveling by downloading maps, reviews, and more for 300-plus cities onto your phone in advance. Then you can skim offline.

Cons

More activity info needed: TripAdvisor focuses much more of its efforts on hotels and restaurants than activities. We'd like to see more information on activities.

With all of its amazing flight and hotel deals and restaurant reviews, TripAdvisor for Android is a must-have app for travelers.

App Permissions Description:

- Storage: TripAdvisor uses Google Maps, which uses external/USB storage for caching downloaded map information.

- Your location: These permissions are needed to obtain your location so we can help you discover hotels, restaurants, and attractions around you. Network-based location gets a quick location, but is not usually pinpoint accurate. GPS is a bit slower to initially locate you, but is usually more accurate.

- Camera: The TripAdvisor phone app allows you to take a picture using your Android device camera directly.

- Network communication: Allows the app to transmit information to and from your phone via the Internet.

- Your accounts: We are using the Android Application Account Manager to store your credentials in a TripAdvisor account (you can find it in Settings under the Accounts tab). If you remove the app we also remove the TripAdvisor account on the device.

- System tools: This location provider permission provides more detailed location information so that TripAdvisor can pick the best possible location source for your current situation. The "test access" permission allows Android to check if it can use your external/USB storage for caching map information.
