• Good App! But ....

  Can't select tabs using standard (Firefox) keyboard commands; .css code complete does not work well with external .css files

  Summary

  I've been using skEdit for several years now. It does the job, doesn't provide me with a constantly visible live screen update (I'd rather see it in my browser), and I like the code complete, though it was hard to get used to at first. My two big gripes about skEdit concerns the way code complete works/doesn't work with external .css files, and the shift from lone developer Sean Kelly (get it? Sean Kelly --> skEdit?) to the new company, Before Dawn Solutions. With the .css files, I have discovered that if I am updating a page, have the .css file open, and copy the text from the page I want to update into a new file (the new (Untitled) file does not load in the tabbed interface), the .css code complete works -- as long as I am doing the work on that untitled file. Unfortunately, it didn't go down far enough in the file to get all of my .css definitions, so some I still had to handle myself. I submitted the bug report back before Sean Kelly sold the project ... and there have been a few updates since that time. As for Before Dawn Solutions, I was Googling skEdit to see if there was an update that I couldn't find on their website ... and I found a mention of a version 4.1.6. Found it in the App Store. Searched the Before Dawn site for any mention of this update, with no luck ... but it's on the App Store. Only problem there is it looks like I have to *buy* it. Again. Next I tried logging into the system; after all, I *did* buy a "forever" license, right? Or so I thought. I could not log into my account. Signed up for one, logged in, and still no information on what was coming. I then sent an e-mail to Support about that, and (you guessed it ...) two days later, and I *still* haven't heard anything ... so I may be looking for another editor here shortly.

• Nonprofessional Web Design Application

  Pros

  Although I disliked most parts of this, there were some good things. It was a good looking interface.

  Cons

  I did not like the importing software, there was not live preview, FTP was hard, cleanup deleted everything, hard to save, no javascript/CSS tools

  Summary

  Bottom line, this is a amateur program for pure HTML documents. And it is even bad for that.

Even there are always things to improve (e.g. project management, file diff, ...) I am able to do everything I need to.

It allows you to manage sites without strewing additional files all over the place. Syntax coloring, tabs, code completion, previewing - its all there. Highly recommended.

I just moved Dreamweaver to trash...

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />after getting tired of editing websites with a plain text editor, i started shopping around and looking at some of the various programs used for development (bbedit, textmate, subethaedit, etc). i was also considering just getting dreamweaver because it is what most people seem to use, but it's so pricey. i eventually came across a review of skedit on the hicksdesign site and downloaded the demo. a very clean interface, very stable. it's lean and powerful at the same time and absolutely worth the price, i'd even pay double. if you don't believe me, check out the demo. i've been using it full time for over a year and it has become an integral part of my development process.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />When I migrated (back) to Mac about 18 months ago, I looked long and hard for a text editor that would do for me what HTML-Kit had done for me in the Windows environment. I finally came on skEdit, which seemed to offer all I wanted (including, for instance, easily-managed snippets for boilerplate text). Since then it has been in constant use in designing and maintaining websites, and I have never had cause to regret my decision. I particularly like the idea of a once-off lifetime payment, which entitles me to free upgrades forever!

I've been a web master for a large ISP for a few years now and skEdit has been the most valuable addition to my tools yet. The developer is great... once you purchase you can join the beta testing team to see up and coming feature and provided feedback and ideas.
