• I'm not easily impressed, but this one is good.

  Pros

  None of that waiting half an hour or even much longer, for the software to "guess" the password. It just makes an almost instant unlocked copy of the file.

  Cons

  It won't work on a file that has to have a user password, in order to open the file. But they say that up front. That still requires a brute force password attack, like "Recover PDF Password". That's the only additional feature that I could ask for.

  Summary

  I'm not easily impressed. But this software does exactly what it says. There are no bells and whistles. It simply makes an almost instant unlocked copy of the locked PDF document. It won't open an encrypted file, but it will make an unlocked version of any file that can be opened without a password. I often receive signed contracts from people who sign the document that I also need to sign. The problem is that they then lock the file, so no changes can be made, which means that I would be unable to sign it, without scanning it. This enables me to sign the document both with a secured image and with an electronic signature. Personally, I much prefer electronic signatures. But the rest of the world hasn't yet golmmed onto the additional security provided by digital signatures. So, while the rest of the world plays catch-up, on digital signatures, I'll use pdf-Recover, to unlock those locked files that I need to sign. Good going, guys. The price is a little high, for a product that does only one thing. But it does that one thing very well.

(These were free Greek language lessons and I needed to unlock them, not for nefarious purposes, but so I could copy-paste the Greek text into Sherlock and translate it! My Greek ain't too good yet.)

We wanted to make the documents into forms to share and send online --- no more printed documents... so by unlocking them, we were able to add the fields in Adobe Acrobat.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />The software does not work unless you pay for it. It will recover the first page of any pdf document but put colored text on it reminding you that you used their trial software. If the PDF is more than one page then it is of no help.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />We had a password-protected file come in this morning that we needed to opened (talk about timing). It "unlocked" it so we could edit it. :) However, it only unlocks protected files that can be viewed. Protected files that can't be viewed - can't be unlocked. I wish it were from a company I was familiar with...I would be more likely to actually buy it...
