    "useless, pointless"

    March 21, 2012  |   By seeharmony

    Version: Zamzar

    Pros

    free, but?????

    Cons

I converted a simple pdf to doc format but it didn't convert it, it just put images of the pages onto a doc! So now instead of a pdf I have images on a doc that I can't do anything with.

    Summary

    Pointless. A waste of time.

    "Pretty all-around useful tool"

    September 12, 2011  |   By Kolrok

    Version: Zamzar

    Pros

    -- Free
-- So far seems spam free
-- Has a wide variety of files it can convert to

    Cons

-- No cons so far except that it takes a bit of time to convert and send to you.

    Summary

Overall seems like a very useful tool to know about; I will use it a lot. I would especially recommend this to people using a computer using something like Open Office instead of Microsoft Office, as Open Office cannot open Publisher documents.

Some cons mentioned above said a con was that it was deleted after a day. This is actually a pro, as many people would not like their files sitting on some website.

"Converts 100s of file formats quickly easily and free !"

    February 16, 2011  |   By coyote116

    Version: Zamzar

    Pros

    - Supports all the main document, image, video and music file formats
    - Excellent free service
    - Can convert files without logging in
    - Converted files arrive quickly

    Cons

Ummmmmm ... can't think of any ... why wouldn't you use it !!!

    Summary

Bottom line is that this is a great service that I've used for ages.

The site has been around for years (since 2006), which gives me a certain level of trust that these guys know what they are doing. They are also adding new formats all the time (you can get updates on their blog), which is great.

"Works, is free, and invades your PC"

    November 30, 2010  |   By Mars1962

    Version: Zamzar

    Pros

It converts easily, even the free online version.

    Cons

Within SECONDS of pressing "Convert", my inbox was filled with spam. SECONDS. And the previous time that I used this, hours later some commercial for air freshener started blasting through the computer speaker-- I wasn't even ON the computer!

    Summary

This is scary software to me -- especially that I couldn't even find which Firefox tab was causing the ad to run -- and that it was hours after using the program. Use at your own risk!

    "BEWARE SCAM !!!"

    October 26, 2010  |   By jessypal

    Version: Zamzar

    Pros

    Good at collecting your emails

    Cons

Where to start? Its a CON i itself.

    Summary

PDF to DOCX gives you a DOCX file that is full of page screen shots. In other words the convertor does nothing more than take each page of the PDF and convert it to bitmap and put those in the DOCX file. Complete waste of my precious 10minutes and countless of your minutes.. if you use it

"Free v. works great, options for upgrade = Just Great!"

    September 28, 2010  |   By kwysfm

    Version: Zamzar

    Pros

Where do I start?! Entirely online, no signing up for anything required (convert and go, so to speak), tons of conversion options (+unexpected ones), free account=100mb limit, stores for 24hrs, relatively fast even with big files..see my full review

    Cons

If converting from a url and/or when downloading from the emailed link, a webpage appears as advertisement. Lowest of the paid accounts isn't given priority and still has to see the ads. The Pros so very much outweigh any cons, though!

    Summary

If you need to convert just about anything to just about anything, this is your best friend! I have lurked on cnet for looooong time, and this is the first product that has impressed me *so* much that I'm writing a review.

Here's my experience: I work for a radio station and am in charge of making sure that a particular special show gets to three stations. Up until tonight this was a trial and half because the program that plays the files on-air reads the files funny and inserts skips. The only fix is to convert the files from mp3 to wav, but once I've done that, the files are too big for even gmail to send :p So I've been having to try a number of infuriatingly painful processes to try to get this show where it needs to go and had almost resigned myself to a 6+ hour long battle each week when I figured I'd look around the 'net one more time for a solution.

So I wander to this page and read the reviews and take a look at it and try it - and it works beautifully. After telling it what file to convert, what to convert it to, and to which email address it can send me a link to download the file, the upload of the file took hardly any time (~50mb at about a minute, maybe), took me to a page that said upload was successful and that I'd receive and email when it was done converting.

About 10 minutes later I received the email. Download was about 7 minutes of the newly converted file...which might seem like a long time unless you've had to work with large files. I'll take it over the hour and a half long download I was using before! (And yes, I have tried a number of methods...trust me when I say that a solution was honestly NOT easy to come by for my problem because of a few factors).

The only thing that worried me was that I hadn't seen anywhere how long conversions and emails usually take and for this to be an effective solution for me, that would need to be sort of predictable. Another handy thing to know would be how many files can be uploaded at a time.

Btw, in case it's not apparent, I'm doing all of this with the free version :)

On the (impressive!) FAQ page, I learned that emails shouldn't take more than an hour and that the free account can upload up to 5 files or 100MB total, whichever comes first.

The thing I LOVED about this was that because of how I have to do things at work, this will act as a (very) temporary server to which I can connect from any computer and grab what I need from the mysterious internets. This aspect is what has caused me to stop looking for anything better...to be better would be...miraculous. And I'm not expecting miracles from a program I'm using for free!

There are, of course, downsides: It's not *as* fast as I'd like (me whining), and at various points a webpage will pop up as advertising.

Frankly, I don't mind this as long as I have avast! running and ccleaner around, as long as the page doesn't make any noise. These ads fail at that - and I'm glad I tried this from my secretarial desk computer instead of remotely on one of the computers running the on-air software (yay for ads in the middle of a song!!! :p ). I have a hatred for those ads (and floaters) because it invades my personal space and time just a little too much.

It also bothered me a little when I looked at the pay options that the lowest may have to wait 3 days for an email response from help and are given higher conversion priority than free, but it's still below the two higher options *and* that option still comes with ads. The only reason I could see getting that option ($7/mo at the time of this writing) is if you need the storage and what you're doing isn't especially timely. Otherwise, you're better off using the free version.

Next up option is $16 and at this point it begins to look tempting with 20g worth of online storage available (v. 5b for $7), but if you're looking at the pay options and can afford it (and do that much converting...?!) the high end option is $49/mo, maximum upload size is 1g (huge!), can upload up to 15 files at a time, highest priority conversion time, no ads, secure conversion (only option that offers this), priority email responses, and (drum roll please) 100g of online storage :)

Of course, this is great if you're doing a ton of converting...if you're not, then for similar features there are cheaper services.

CONCLUSION: I have very little negative to say about Zamar! Saving me 6+hours of infuriated ranting time each week. I love it!

    March 13, 2010  |   By Mudiver1

    Version: Zamzar

    Pros

I needed a large retail catalog converted from PDF to Word. Converted file was sent by link promptly. Downloaded the file and that's all there was to it, saveing me a lot of time. I did not pay a dime for it, I did not have to sign up for it.

    Cons

I can not think of any, maybe a bit of spam from a free service I don't know.

    Summary

It worked for my PDF conversion issue, problem solved case closed.
