Editors' review

It's not uncommon for people to have multiple computers these days: home computer and work computer, or desktop and laptop. Although the ubiquity of computers is convenient, spreading our computer use over several different machines can make it difficult to keep up with our data. Fortunately, bookmarks are something that you can easily sync across machines or browsers thanks to Xmarks for Chrome. This simple extension keeps your bookmarks consistent across locations, ensuring that you always have access to the sites you need to remember.

Like most Chrome extensions, Xmarks installs easily. The extension then guides you through a set-up wizard, where you will create an Xmarks account if you don't already have one. Xmarks then backs up your bookmarks to the cloud, where they'll wait safely until you need them. To access them elsewhere, simply install the Xmarks add-on on another machine or browser, sign in, and your bookmarks will be synced automatically. Because Xmarks works with Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer, it's easy to standardize your bookmarks across browsers. Users who don't necessarily want all of their bookmarks synced can create profiles that contain specific bookmarks and exclude others. Xmarks even lets users view open tabs remotely--a very cool feature if you left an important page open but can't remember the URL. Overall, we were quite impressed with the range of features that Xmarks offers, and we think it's a fantastic choice for anyone who uses more than one computer.

Xmarks for Chrome installs and uninstalls without issues. We highly recommend this extension to all users.

"Very buggy app; I'm continually fighting with it"

    June 17, 2013   |   By CareyVandenberg

    Version: Xmarks for Chrome 1.0.24

    Pros

It can work very well if you only use Chrome

    Cons

If you use Firefox and / or Explorer as well, you are going to get duplicates which is the most common problem. I finally decided to right a review when NOW, all the bookmarks in my "bookmarks bar" are gone.

    Summary

If there is another bookmark syncing software out there, let us all know because XMarks isn't as good as the Star Ratings say.

"Loved it till it ate most of my nested bookmarks"

    May 05, 2013   |   By Rokoroo

    Version: Xmarks for Chrome 1.0.24

    Pros

If you use it in the most basic of ways it's great.

    Cons

    Doesn't handle nested bookmarks
Doesn't explain what they mean by "Profiles", which is not what most people mean by profiles

    Summary

Used it for about a year and loved it, then one day it started acting strange, reactivating bookmarks within a profile for which I'd unchecked those bookmarks. Then one day many of my most used bookmarks were gone. They were even gone from the history on their site! I had no way of retrieving them and could find no way of contacting the company to see if they could help. I removed all XMarks from my system (Firefox, IE, Safari and Chrome versions) and am looking for a more reliable alternative.
