"Focuses the mind."

March 17, 2011  |  By ThomasHarte

 |  Version: WriteRoom 2.3.7

Pros

Minimalist, even to the extent of dealing with files for you, fast and light.

Cons

Could be cheaper; same functionality built into StoryMill which costs twice as much but does about ten times as much if you're looking towards writing character driven prose.

Summary

It's a c.1985 digital typewriter, for your Mac. A great tool for when you want to focus on getting some text onto the screen, without distractions.

"writing with this program will not make your eyes tired"

November 29, 2010  |  By salidown

 |  Version: WriteRoom 2.3.7

Pros

I like the blank dark screen and various format's that it represents.

Cons

it's expensive. but it's worthy.

Summary

I tried many opensource and free programs most of them are not even close to Writeroom!
with help of this program I really could focus just on what I intend to write and after I finished my writing I can save it any format I like. And above all it doesn't make my eyes tired.

"The only software that helps you focus on writing."

November 29, 2010  |  By ilgaar

 |  Version: WriteRoom 2.3.7

Pros

Great when you want to focus on writing, without a distraction, excellent when you need those features from complex word processors. above all it supports most common and proprietary format like .doc, .docx and many more.

Cons

It's a bit expensive but the usefulness of the product makes it worthy.

Summary

A genius idea to keep the writer focused on his thoughts and write down his ideas without distraction while having features, options and many functions when you need them.

"This is a joke, right?"

November 07, 2009  |  By Joe M

 |  Version: WriteRoom 2.3.7

Pros

Retro-looking display, if you're into that kind of thing.

Cons

Costs 25 bucks, and gives almost nothing in return.

Summary

Look, I understand the appeal of streamlined, even minimalist applications, but this is stupid. 25 bucks for a TextEdit shell that actually removes functionality from the rich text editor that comes included with OS X.

For what? A "distraction-free" display? Just how ADD must you be to get "distracted" by TextEdit? If your are bent on having a retro-looking editing screen, download Bean for free, which gives you that option.

I can't help but think this was intended as a joke by the program author...

"Truly Lovely...A Real Class Act"

Well, WriteRoom sure does work for me. It helps, in a big way, to create that perfect distraction free writing environment for putting high quality prose down on "paper". It allows me to focus more, to get, and stay, in a very calm and centered place.......essential to me when I'm writing.
To me, WriteRoom is worth every penny of its $25 cost.
I found the perfect color backgrounds and font style/color, choices that fit me to a "T", and the words just flow!
Two thumbs up for WriteRoom.......a real treasure!

...writing this way

Hey, Mr. El i.gaucho: So I think it's great that you upgraded your review, but you still miss the point. WriteRoom is distraction free, feature-overload free, retro writing pleasure. My wife got this a while back and doesn't use anything else for writing. Even her online stuff, she drafts in WR. She is a switcher, and didn't even want to use Word on the Mac anymore.

I dig this ap to, because it hasn't caused her or our young son a single problem. I think the developer is right, in that it delivers on its promise. Like 200%. It may be niche, but it's an excellent ap in its niche.

I have a few other writer friends whom I have recommended this to (and for the PC guys I recommended they try that PC clone, can't remember the name or know whether it's as slick). At least two of our friends have fell in love with this too, and I'm not aware of any problems.

If you need feature-rich distraction and all that, fire up Word. If you want a simple, fast and kind of cool retro experience, this is it. (Though my wife uses this, I use a different ap, which I recommend for more project oriented writing, and it has a similar full screen mode--Copywrite. Not quite as simple as this, but if you need to organize docs in anyway, I also recommend that. I don't write books or screenplays, but I have a lot of writing projects, and for that, I would recommend a look at that as well.).

"Same basic features as Mac Journal -- but still..."

Summary

...solid
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I could not find any huge difference between the relatively inexpensive Mac Journal and this program. That said it is pretty sold. Just do not understand 1) why ANOTHER writing program and 2) why $25?!? ouch! talk about pricing yourself out of the market...

Solid program, foolish market placement and price...

"Use it every day and love it!"

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
If you haven't used this app, please give it a fair evaluation before jumping to conclusions. It has a great feature set for serious writing and nothing more. No unnecessary complexity. No geegaws and gadgets that have little or nothing to do with the actual act of writing.

I make my living writing. I have plenty of 800 lb. gorilla apps at my disposal. When I need to format a document, I have tools appropriate for that task. But when I want a clean screen free of distractions that just lets me write, WriteRoom is where I go.

And can someone explain what the big deal is about $25.00? That's a movie for two and maybe a small popcorn (no drink). I took my family of four to see Eragon over the holidays â?? you want to talk about overpriced and under-delivering?
