    "I've tried this number."

    Version: Wine XT 2.3.7

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I could not recommend this software for reasons of its fundamental design. I could well be wrong (sorry) but I suspect that Wine XT uses SQLite for its core data handling, and as we found out with other similar applications (iBlog, for example) SQLite can be the undoing of otherwise good software ideas.

So it is that each time I use it, it is not long before I end up with corrupted data and SQLerrors on cellar records. Often with the same data appearing differently in different screens (for example, addresses appear differently in the address book versus the specific cellar entry for a wine). This is a fundamental weakness that undemines the virtue of buying the product.

but it does not stop with weaknesses in the database engine, there are challenges with the database schema as well. The lack of utilities (preferences) to make modifications to things as fundamental as "WineType" are critical; nor is there the possibility to change columns in the main view and when Tools|Country Editor is changed it only effects the drop-down boxes in in the cellar record windows not the main windows (which retain deactivated entries) and then its impossible to drill down through Countries, Regions, Areas and Classifications and...oh one could go on for ever......

I agree that with a a bit more thought these issues could be addressed but the fundamental limitation is that v2.x of the program, and the core platform on which it is based, appears fundamentally weak to me and I therefore need to find a different solution.

Unfortunately a versiontracker search on "wine" reveals nothing better (from this or other developers) such that I feel users looking for cellar-software will need to look at the Windows or Palm platform.

Certainly do not accept this offering solely because it operates on a Mac.

    "Excellent wine management application"

    Version: Wine XT 2.0.7

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Over the past year and a half I've watched this application grow better and better with each release. I use it to manage my 500-bottle collection, and it's the best wine manager I've found for the Macintosh.

The amount of data that can be kept on a bottle is staggering. I mostly use the basic information (type, region, year, best-drinking dates) and ratings from my favorite wine reviewers. The built in cellar reports do everything I need them to do, but they're also customizable via templates.

One nice feature that the author added is that winery & wine supplier information is stored in the Mac Address Book, so that they're available through that application as well.

"For $50 you can buy a nice 2000 Haut Medoc"

    Summary

So what's with the 2000 Bordeaux prices now? Back in January I could buy some cru artisans or bourgeoise and even some grand crus from various applelations for a lot less than the price of this software. And now they've skyrocketed up 3x to 5x in price. My local shop was smart enough to buy 2000 futures but their stash is gone now. But I'm not paying $50 to keep track of something I'll probably drink in the next ten years anyway. And this app really offers nothing. It's pretty lame. So for $50 I'm buying a bottle of 2000 Chateau Fombrauge Saint Emilion Grand Cru and an In 'n Out double cheeseburger with fries. Yum!

    "Watch out for drunken pirates!"

    October 17, 2003   |   By Xeater

    Version: Wine XT 1.5.3

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Well I installed this on my Dad's iMac for kicks since he likes to drink wine. He opened it up and poked around, but basically thought the same as previous reviewers, "What's this DO?" He just couldn't figure out what this app DOES. "You mean it's $50 to do something I could do with a pad of paper and a pencil?"

So he got ripped one night and after his second bottle of wine, he fired up WineXT and had an absolute blast. All the pretty graphics and slunky buttons had him going. He entered his two wine "conquests" for the night, then worked on a third, then a fourth. After four entries he slept it off.

Next thing I know, he's gone and pirated a serial number, says "I'd pay $10 no sweat, but $50 is a lot of good wine!". A week later, he's gotten 30 more entries. Seems that WineXT has some sort of pull on him, gives him the urge to fill out as many forms as he can for different wines and vintages. Two weeks later he's worked it up to 6 new entries a night, and he's aiming for 8 entries per day in another two weeks! He's retired so he's got the time, but my mother has something else to say about it. One day he fires up the iMac and lines up his empty bottles to enter his conquests for the day, when he emits a low, urgent groan. "Where's the Wine app?? I must be real loaded..." Finally, my mom had wiped WineXT clean off the HD, and in a few days my dad was clean and sober.

Basically, WineXT turned my dad into a SN-pirating criminal, and a raging alcoholic. Luckily he was on an iMac, so deleting WineXT was a simple drag n' drop procedure, but if he'd been on a Wintel, my Mom couldn't have figured out how to delete it, and my dad may very well have drunk himself to death in a criminal haze of software piracy. All because WineXT is an overpriced heap of garbage.
