Publisher's Description
From Microsoft:
This update addresses two security vulnerabilities in Windows Media Player. The two vulnerabilities are a buffer overrun in the functionality used to process Active Stream Redirector (.ASX) files, and a vulnerability affecting how Windows Media Player handles Internet shortcuts. In addition, this update addresses a potential privacy vulnerability that was recently identified. This patch should be used with Windows Media Player 6.4, 7, or 7.1.

"VERY IMPORTANT PATCH"
Version: Windows Media Player ASF Unchecked Buffer Vulnerability MS01-056
Summary
This fixes a problem when a malicious user can purposly crash the application and while it's crashed, he can send a virus such as Nimbda or Code Red. This will eventually allow him FULL ADMINISTRATIVE RIGHTS to your entire network domain. The main threat applies to Windows NT/2000, since there is not really any "file level security" on Windows 9x/XP Home Edition.

Summary
I have found that MS updates like to run alone. I also virus scan the downloaded file before I install. I shut down all running programs until only systray and explorer are runing. A fast way to do this is with EndItAll. After the install is complete I reboot. Note - Most MS fixes/patches can be viewed with Winzip.
