"Finally found a product I yearned for years!"
Version: WinGDB 2.2
- Can debug for CygWin through Visual Studio! Won't ever need to spend days porting software just be able to use that debugger interface.
- Great support; useful, friendly and fast replies.
Setting up the project (and registration as well) is straightforward, but not click-of-a-button (e.g., need to fill out some directory names); a few small catches that a careful reader will avoid.
But once you set it up, you can forget it's there, and just use Visual Studio.
My main testbed is Linux, but I like developing (and, most importantly, debugging) in Visual Studio. I spent hours and hours porting projects to make them dual-platform before I could develop - and I still think that it paid off.
I've looked for something like this some years ago, and was very disappointed. Some weird things I tried didn't work, so I lost hope that there could be something comfortable. A few years I didn't even search for another solution - until I found a Linux project that was so platform-dependent it would be easier to re-write than to port. Without much hope, I searched once again - and there it was!
I've used it for about a month now, and am very happy.
I do see some occasional weirdness (no errors, but rarely it hangs), but so far restarting Visual Studio solved everything.
It's nowhere as buggy as I expected based on my attempted previous solutions. It's something I can set and generally forget I'm working through CygWin.
