WinContig

Defragmenting files and folders on your hard drive is necessary to keep your system in check, but the whole process can take a long time and can put your computer out of commission while in use. WinContig is a different kind of defragmentation tool, offering options for defragmenting specific files rather than the entire disk. We found it easy to use and surprisingly fast.

The program has a very straightforward user interface that will appeal to users of all skill levels. You'll find menu options and shortcut buttons across the top of the window, a panel for displaying added files and folders, and below that, a real-time account of the defrag status. We were able to quickly browse for, and select, the folder that we wanted to defragment. The program quickly went to work, analyzing our C drive and displaying the number of processed files, fragmented files, contiguous files, and files not analyzed due to processing errors. From there, we clicked the Defragment option, which prompted us to check our disk for errors and then to start the clean up process. We especially liked that the program let us work while it ran without slowing down our computer's performance. In a matter of minutes, our C drive was successfully defragmented. The program includes the ability to add items to be excluded during the defrag process. It also lets you load and save profiles, which led us to our one complaint about the program: no Help feature. It wasn't entirely clear how the profile feature worked, so we paid a visit to the publisher's Web site only to find that it's in Italian. Thankfully, the program's other features are extremely intuitive.

WinContig comes as a ZIP file and no installation is required. Despite the lack of help, we recommend it as a capable defragmentation program.

Publisher's Description

From Marco D'Amato:

WinContig is an easy-to-use stand-alone defragmentation tool that doesn't create any installation directories or Registry entries on your computer. Its purpose is to quick defrag files without the need to defrag the whole disk. In addition, WinContig allows you to group files into profiles, and also it accepts a number of optional command-line switches that you can use to control how the program operates. WinContig is a standalone executable, and it doesn't require any installation process or additional DLLs. In order to start using it, just extract the contents of the ZIP archive to any folder you like, and run it.

What's new in this version: Version 1.05.03 added the Georgian language file and fixed few bugs.

    "nicely compliments other defrag apps"

    January 20, 2009  |   By caenet

    Version: WinContig 0.80

    Pros

portable, fast, check disk & disk cleanup options

    Cons

defragments files not drives; i.e., does not compact files only defrags them.

    Summary

I will use WinContig to defrag my XP laptops before shutdown, because WinContig has the
check disk & disk cleanup options that other apps typically do not have..

    Updated on Jan 23, 2009

Not a 5-star defrag app. I've subsequently discovered that WinContig does NOT
detect/defrag all fragmented files. This is a serious deficiency.

    "Easy to use and excellent!!"

    July 9, 2008  |   By Stealth081

    Version: WinContig 0.80

    Pros

It's easy to use and improves your PC much better than Window's Defragmentor and other Defragment programs. The thing I like most it that you can check almost anything-e.g. Disk Errors, Clean up files and has better accurancy and percise on deframenting.

    Cons

I guess depending on your O\S and computer-it depends because it could freeze but most unlikely if you have your system fine-tuned.
