Virtual WiFi Router

CNET Editors' review

If you access the Internet via Wi-Fi at home, work, or school, it's almost always through a Wi-Fi router. Almost -- because you can turn any Wi-Fi-capable Windows 7 PC into a virtual Wi-Fi router that can share Internet connections and create wireless networks. The capability is built into Windows 7 (and some earlier releases), but it's not easy to enable. Virtual Wi-Fi Router's simple GUI and user-friendly controls make it easy to turn your Wi-Fi-equipped PC or laptop into a wireless hub. Your laptop can be a mobile Wi-Fi router you can use in the car, hotels, or anywhere you can connect to the Internet. Virtual Wi-Fi Router is portable freeware for Windows NT, Vista, Server 2008, and 7, but it runs in Windows 8, too.

Virtual Wi-Fi Router has a small, simple user interface with tabs for displaying Settings and Clients Connected. Our only gripe is that it stays pinned to the notification area, even if you use the pin button; you can't drag it into a new position. We keep the taskbar on the right side of our wide, wide desktop, and it obscured Virtual WiFi Router's edge. But if you've set up a public Wi-Fi connection on your computer before, you should have little trouble configuring this app's settings, which don't involve much more than naming your new hot spot, choosing a connection to share, and pressing either Start (if your connection is already set up) or Configure (if you need to set up or edit your connection). The Clients Connected tab displays each device and IP address accessing your hot spot. Clicking Refresh rescans the network, just like with your other Wi-Fi software. At the bottom of the interface are Help and About panels with links to configuration instructions, e-mail support, and updates and log files.

Our ad-hoc Wi-Fi network seemed to perform as well as the dedicated Wi-Fi router providing the connection. What can we do with it? Carry it with us, for starters, to create collaborative, password-protected networks on the go. You can also extend your main router's range with it. Virtual WiFi Router makes it easy.

    "Great tool!"

    February 27, 2013  |   By The_VGE

    Version: Virtual WiFi Router 2.0

    Pros

    Does exactly what it says!
Solved my problem from having the inability to connect to hot-spot, due to distance.

    Cons

None so far, except to the fact that the windows cannot be moved.

    Summary

Would definitely recommend it to anyone needing "extra" hotspots

    "Works with Windows 7"

    February 21, 2013  |   By art_hunter

    Version: Virtual WiFi Router 2.0

    Pros

I was delighted to see it working with Windows 7.

    Cons

Then I rebooted the same machine into the Windows 8 partition and after reloading from scratch, it failed. I didn't spend a lot of time trying to find out why but I suspect there is a setting somewhere that would fix this.

    Summary

A very creative idea. If only the Windows 8 installation would have worked, I would be really delighted.

    "Excellent application"

    February 14, 2013  |   By jer1950

    Version: Virtual WiFi Router 2.0

    Pros

Easy to install. Fast to set up. So simple you think you are doing something wrong.

    Cons

I am still having trouble finding the install. It appears that unlike most downloads, it really isn't an application that need installtion but a little bit of code that allows you to harness the existing capablilities of Windows. The download appears to be the entire program without the need to "install". I guess there is limited interaction with the registry - confusing in this world of complicated programs.

    Summary

Worth the price I paid and about $20 bucks more (a total of $20 he he)

    "Works fine on Windows 7."

    December 10, 2012  |   By swanjame

    Version: Virtual WiFi Router 2.0

    Pros

Works fine on Windows 7. I had trouble getting it to work consistently until I reinstalled it using the publisher's download link. It seemed like I had to run the CBET installer everytime I wanted to start the program.

    Cons

    Summary

    Adds a neat little capability.

    "Up in seconds!"

    August 30, 2012  |   By stu9000

    Version: Virtual WiFi Router 2.0

    Pros

Very quick and easy. No messing with configuration menus or squinting at endless screenshots. Quick download and install, set the pass word and your network is up. My old win xp laptop and nexus 7 linked up without fuss. The win 7 host laptop just ran it. Brilliant.

    Cons

    None.
My old XP laptop, new win 7 host laptop and nexus 7 all linked up and have been running it for an hour without connection drop out. The host win 7 lapttop plugs into an ethernet cable that plugs into a TP Link Power Adaptor (turns your earth wire into network cable) that plugs into a 25 foot power extension cable that plugs into the garage power socket, that comes out to the TP Link Adaptor that connects to my ancient orange router. I cant quite believe it, but it works!

    Summary

    get this one
