This program analyzes and defragments you computer in a very short amount of time. It even goes further to let you manually place files in high performing areas of your hard drive. Unfortunately, it uses a very unattractive user interface to accomplish all of these tasks.
We were a little put off at first by UltimateDefrag 2008 because we had to run it as an Administrator to access it. Otherwise, it produced an error. The program opens with a garishly designed interface that is busy and hard on the eyes. The multiple colors used also make it difficult to navigate. Not knowing where to go first, we clicked the button to start analyzing our C drive, and immediately, the program began the process. In a matter of minutes, it had displayed the file count, contiguous files, and fragmented files. Through the Options menu, we were able to manually add files to the outer, higher performance area of the hard drive, or archive specific files in the less used spaces. If you don't want to manually add files, you can automate the process and designate percentages to each area. We also liked that you can exclude files from the whole process.
Aside from the horrid interface design, we were also disappointed with the program's help options. It offers a PDF Help file, but we were unable to access it. On top of that, we found very little help through the publisher's Web site. That being said, novice users should bypass this program. But more experienced users might want to use the 14-day trial period to give this program a try.
Publisher's description
From DiskTrix :UltimateDefrag lets you defrag and optimize your hard drive any way you want to. Hard drive file use adheres to the Pareto Rule of 80/20. 80% of the time you only use 20% of the files on your hard drive. UltimateDefrag lets you place those unused files out of the way onto the slower tracks of your drive. UltimateDefrag also considers the high performance areas of your hard drive (the outer tracks) and enables you to strategically place the files and folders you want the best performance from to these faster outer tracks. UltimateDefrag also provides the first true disk display metaphor in a defragger.
UltimateDefrag can place Directories next to your MFT for very fast MFT/Directory transactions. This alone vastly accelerates performance of your hard drive. Clever OptiSeek Technology will organize your hard drive so that most file accesses will equal the track-to-track seek time for your hard drive. Includes over 200 total defrag method combinations. Version 2.0.0.55.

"Well presented and user friendly."
Pros: Easy access to options. Plenty of information on tasks undertaken.
Cons: Length of time taken to drfrag large drives (several days)
Summary: I have been using the product since inception. There is still alot I need to learn about it, but the bottom lines is that it keeps my system functional and the difference in performance is noticeable.

"Great software! c|net reviewer is an idiot (see below)."
Pros: Unbelievable! Really good software. You'll want to buy this software (I did), so get this 14 day free trial version rather than the totally free version to test it. That will save you uninstalling the free one. Small footprint.
Cons: To get the very best optimization, file placement and HDD speed requires some reading of their PDF instructions. Even a novice user can skip the PDF and get huge improvements in hard disk performance, but the manual is a great HDD primer for novices.
Summary: First, I'm starting to wonder if a competitor of Ultimate Defrag wrote all the other reviews before this one.
Second, there is no other defragger out there that is also optimizing file placement like this software does, nor in the sophist... read more >> -

"Non-existant Technical Support"
Pros: Excellent capabilities.
Cons: Inadequate documentation and virtually no support. Totally non responsibe to email support after first automatic email that says they will contact you within 48 hours.
Summary: , I found the lack of documentation appalling. I was sure that a complete manual would be included but to date I have been unable to find anything besides the six Tutorials received during the trial period, which in my opinion were vague and incompl... read more >>

"Big problem with program--- PLUS---NO support!!!"
Pros: I can't list anything here
Cons: I PAID for this program and it will not function as advertized. The boot option (ver 055) simply will NOT work and Disktrix will not answer my support emails. I have finally uninstalled Ultimate Defrag in favor of a program that actually works.
Summary: Don't waste your time with a Company that could care less. Disktrix now has a smaller program called DefragExpress and they want $14.95 ($11.95 until May 1st.). DefragExpress trial version really screwed up my system and besides, "Smart Defrag" does... read more >>
