CNET editors' review

Reviewed by: CNET Staff

Although it offers a great deal of configuration options and an easy-to-use layout editor, this somewhat limited trial of Ultimate Mahjong heavily taxes system resources. It comes preloaded with a huge variety of tile layouts and lets you easily make more with its editor. You also can change the game's wallpaper and background music. The tiles themselves can be switched among traditional mahjong symbols, playing cards, and animal pictures. The images on the tiles look nice enough, and the game's sounds and music are decent but not spectacular. In the default 3D view, we sometimes found it difficult to determine which layer a tile was on. During gameplay, animations of indistinct colored spots and butterflies fly around the playing field, which contributes to the game's high system-resource usage. We observed a CPU load of 50 to 70 percent while playing the game, which starved the other programs we had running of resources. You can turn off the butterflies and view the game in 2D, which should significantly reduce system overhead. Our other problem with the game is its 15-minute limit on play time. You can, however, relaunch the game after it shuts down and play for another 15 minutes with no ultimate number of days when the game will stop working completely. We mainly like this game for its variety of customization settings and seemingly endless tile layouts.

Publisher's description

From Inertia Software :

Ultimate Mahjong combines breathtaking graphics and a complete set of features and tools. View the tiles in 2D or 3D, both of which look fantastic and have amazing special effects. Watch as mysterious butterflies flutter gently about the screen and fade away, and see tiles explode into clouds of stars as they are matched off. You can even set up colored lighting effects, create your own, or choose from a list of themes, including Moonlight Sonata and Halloween Scream.

Ultimate Mahjong comes with both tile-set and tile-layout editors. If you get tired of the 200 standard layouts, create your own. The tile-set editor lets you put your own pictures on the tiles, and everything is simple and easy to do, including sharing your layouts or tile sets with others.

Version 1.2 features minor improvements and bug fixes.
