    Version: Ubuntu 9.10

"Totally modern look and feel! Best Ubuntu yet!"

    by BigAl35540 on November 8, 2009

Pros: Online Software Center the other two are still beta testing. Works great! Real modern look and feel to the OS! Lightning speed on the Internet. Really quick boot time!

Cons: Lousy media players! When is Ubuntu going to get something like Winamp? Evolution email client has a file attachment problem! The HTML quirks in both Evolution and Mozilla FireFox are still there after all this time!

Summary: The open software community can be extremely proud of Ubuntu Karmic Koala! It is a throughly modern operating system in all aspects! Gone is the Windows 98ish look of the Windows, especially the monster sized buttons in the upper right corner. They ... read more >>

    Version: Ubuntu 9.10

    "Still a work in progress"

    by 203 on October 31, 2009

Pros: Free. Memory and resources efficient

Cons: Disfuntional wireless upon installation on my Dell Mini9. No application to control which services you have running. OCD like over logging and archiving (file size creep). Desktop interface now looking very old compared to the alternatives.

Summary: I've recently seen a few articles along the lines of "Ubuntu 9.10 versus Windows 7". Now as much as I am quite happy running Ubuntu on my Dell netbook, to me any talk of Ubuntu being anything like a competant challenge to Windows 7 and Windows mas... read more >>

    Version: Ubuntu 9.10

    "It's a contender"

by Pibley on October 30, 2009

    Pros: Outstanding value.
    Improved hardware/driver support.
    Ease of installation.
    Improved user friendliness.
    FAST!

Cons: Requires time investment to learn.
Software center no longer shows software popularity.
Lacks sharpness and clarity of Windows Aero interface and looks more like Mac in that regard.
Fewer applications to choose from when compared to Mac and Windows.

Summary: I think Ubuntu has finally put out an OS that's worthy of being used as a full-time OS for those with typical computing needs. I've been using Ubuntu for about 4 years and the out-of-box experience with Ubuntu 9.10 has been a pleasure. It still la... read more >>
