Lost or stolen mobile devices are a growing data security threat, yet there's no need to panic over sensitive data falling into the wrong hands if it's protected. That's where USB Flash Security from Kashu System Design comes in. It's a free USB security utility for mobile devices.

USB Flash Security's compact, tabbed interface displays all installed disk drives on your PC, but the software will only install on those drives with USB access. It's a keep-it-simple layout: there's a display window, file menus for Operations and Help, Exit and Update buttons, and the Install command bar, but that's it. We inserted a USB flash drive, and USB Flash Security immediately identified it. Selecting the drive for installing the software called up a password creation wizard that has an interesting option to set your password hint to display when you hover the cursor. We installed the software, removed the drive, reinserted it, and copied some files to it, calling up the password entry dialog. We entered the password and gained access to the USB drive's volume, transferred the files, ejected the drive, and reinserted it again. Clicking the drive displayed the USB Flash Security executable, which we then clicked to recall the password entry dialog. We entered the password and gained access to the data. We like the fact that the password entry field doesn't automatically appear when you try to access the drive since there's no reason to help thieves figure things out.

Kashu is a Japanese developer that is entering the global software market, and its documentation is written in somewhat fractured English that occasionally takes some figuring out. However, the Help file is not only clear and concise but helpful as well. All told, USB Flash Security is an easy-to-use tool that offers effective password protection for mobile data devices.

Pros
Great program for the 15-day trial. When you plug in the protected USB into any computer you have to insert a password or all you see is a drive with no free space. I tried it on XP and Win7 boxes no probs. Unplugging it resets it everytime. Perfect.
Cons
Was gearing up to make it mandatory at my office, then the 15-day trial ran out and I could no longer install it on anything.
Summary
Would be great if it was free, but it's not. And their pricing plan made absolutely no sense to me.

Cons
As ugolaprofonda indicates, the review doesn't mention the 4GB drive limit. Very unprofessional and a waste of time for those with larger flash drives.

Waste of my time. Updated on Aug 5, 2013According to the developers website, this is shareware {Software can be used free for 15 days from installing security to PC.}, not freeware as indicated by the review. Licenses are one-time only and cost: up to 4GB is $4.99, up to 8GB is $19.99, up to 16GB is $39.99 and up to 2TB is $49.99. That's hardly what *I* would call "free".

Pros
It's a great software, easy to use and reliable. Also protects the entire USB drive, unlike other programs (took a lot of searches -_-). It can also be used anywhere without software installed (I think, so far. I'll have to try it at school to find out. I'm sure it can be used though!)
Cons
Free is only able to install on one USB and can only be used on 4GB or less. (good thing I usually use that, lol). It can also be easily deleted by accident....
Summary
Great Software; I really like it and it's what I have been looking for since SanDisk's secureaccess is not really as great and Kingston doesn't have an autorun password encrypt (i installed in on the Kingston :p)

It actually works, IF the memory stick isn't larger than 4 gigs, AND on only one memory stick! Easy to use, way above most of other free password tools. Steps: Install on computer. Insert USB. Open program. Install on USB w/password. Use it.
Cons
The size limit on 4GB and the limit to install it on only a single USB stick is of course a drag. But if you're OK with that, it's a good choice, and with pretty easy (though poor english) interface.
Summary
It does not require the computers you use it with later to have the program installed, the installation on the USB stick is a one time experience. If it stated more clearly it's limitations, I would have given it a 5 star rating, but when it doesn't even give you a clear error message if you try a larger mem stick, it's a 2 star from me.

The free version I noticed does have limitations. It can only do drives 4gb or less. Paid does more. Free also only does fat file system. But that's fine for me. I have a drive that has a lot of security tools on it, and I use it..(continues in cons)
Cons
and I use it to clean infected pcs. I wanted to password protect my drive not only for security, but for against threats as well. This tool worked great. It has terrible help, but it does not take long to figure out. The tool works fine for me.
Summary
It works great, worth trying it out. Just make SURE that the data that's on your drive is taken off (copy to desktop) before installing the tool to your drive, as it deletes everything off of it to password protect it. Once you unlock the drive with your password, simply copy your files back over to your drive.
