System Shock 2 is the sequel to the award-winning original System Shock. It is 35 years after the destruction by an unnamed hacker of the TriOptimum-owned Citadel Station and Shodan, the rogue AI controlling it. TriOptimum scientists develop the theory for a faster-than-light starship drive, but the UNN is unwilling to allow TriOptimum sole access to the rest of the universe. Later, a compromise is reached: a TriOptimum corporate starship, the Von Braun, is constructed, but on its maiden voyage it will be accompanied by a UNN heavy destroyer, the Rickenbacker, in case of any hostile alien encounters. The Rickenbacker is crewed by UNN Navy, Marines, and the OSA--experts in psionics.
Your character is one of the Rickenbacker's soldiers and, after training, the game starts as you find yourself waking from cold sleep aboard the Von Braun with no memory of the past weeks. An electronic message from Dr. Janice Polito has just arrived, telling you to come find her on Deck Four, but as you start your journey toward her, all you encounter are scenes of carnage and chaos; the logs of the crew members that you find do not yet explain what has caused things to go so very wrong...
In the demo, you will start with a smattering of weapon skills, tech skills, and cybernetics. You can grow your character any way that you see fit by advancing your skill in the categories that you choose. The full version allows you to build your character in the 3D RPG character generation system. You can choose from three different branches of military service.

Cons
Downloaded via Steam. Tried to run under Wine in Ubuntu x64. Installed OK, but would not run. Received error message:
A required security module cannot be activated. This program cannot be executed (8008).
A security module on a demo? Oh well, since I do not use Windows, I will not be spending any money on this game. At least Id supports Linux gaming.

Pros
There are a number of different tasks involved in this game that vary from activating the engines to killing a hive-mind.
You have a number of different weapons each of which has different applications and the use of special skills and psychic powers is useful at times.
Cons
Too many psychic powers, I found myself only using a handful of those available after spending hard earned skill point obtaining a wide selection.
One tracked gameplay, you don't feel like you have any decisions to make in this game, you just follow preset orders.
Little career variety, while choosing between the three different careers on offer gives you a varied start to the game this quickly gets eliminated as you upgrade your abilities within the game.

Summary
This has to be one of the best games ever.
I'm not easily scared by games or movies, but this one just had my skin crawling; it's so CREEPY.
The mood is excellent throughout and the turns of event keep you moving constantly solving problems and fighting off "The Many" to regain control of the Von Braun, but a suprise awaits you halfway through, which changes everything. -

Summary
The best game I have ever Played.
The main key to the game is sound, listen carefull for clues if there are cameras, robots, or mutants close by. Every step I was scared of being spotted by cameras or get attacked by mutants, if you are spotted all hell breaks loose. Oh yeah and dont forget to use AP (armor piercing) bullet clips for robots and HP (human piercing) bullet clips for the mutants, and other creatures. Download it, you'll be glad you did. -

Summary
This is the game you've been waiting for if you like story and atmosphere more than frags. Very spooky and one of the few games that emersed me totally, the other being Half-life. I highly recommend to anyone who doesn't mind playing something that is not state of the art. Also, a graphically enhanced mod is in development and can be previewed at //perso.wanadoo.fr/etienne.aubert/sshock/sshock_rebirth.htm with http in front.
