Publisher's description of Syberia II demo

From XS Games:

Embarking on a desperate search for Hans Voralberg, Kate Walker crosses Europe from West to East. She has left behind all her worldly possessions with the express purpose of joining the heir of the Voralberg family on his journey. Together, through mystical and enchanting lands, they will find their way to the mythical Syberia, land of the forgotten mammoths. Thus Syberia II begins.

Kate Walker, powerbroker turned heroine, returns in this adventure-game sequel created by Benoit Sokal. The sequel picks up after Syberia's finale, chronicling the continuing adventures of Kate and her quest to find the mysterious land known as Syberia. Try out Microids' adventure-game sequel in this demo that walks you through an early portion of the game.

  • Version reviewed: Syberia II demo
In the sequel to the popular adventure game Syberia, Kate Walker returns in another mysterious quest. Photo-realistic graphics and easy-to-learn controls can't make up for a demo that's simply far too short. Though the sequel looks fantastic, there's not enough action to see any advances to the puzzle-based gameplay.

The demo is basic. Kate must traverse a snowy landscape, cross a river, enter a fishing hut, outwit a bear who has trapped her in the hut, and recross the river. Despite lacking the drama or suspense that a full game with a complete story line would give us, the demo offers an introduction to the gameplay.

Users can control Kate via a point-and-click or key-control interface, although key control still involves a fair amount of cursor control and selecting. Kate usually can either look or perform an action in various settings. She can carry objects she finds in her inventory, then use them at later times. The sequential form of puzzle-solving--learn one fact to determine the object to get, then use this object to get another object--is well-developed and rational. You won't need to search online for a walk-through or hints. The full game might provide an immersive adventure, but the Syberia II demo doesn't give much indication of it.
