Sponge

Publisher's Description

From Pmcc:

Sponge allows you to download files from Usenet Newsgroups. An account with a Usenet News Server is required to use Sponge. It supports yEnc, uuEncode and Mime formats and decodes them while the download is in progress so there is no wait time for decoding after the articles have been downloaded. Search Usenet without downloading headers using online search engines or use the ability to offload article search to your news server. If your news server supports it, all information passed between your computer and the news server is encrypted using SSL.

What's new in this version: Version 3.1.3721 improves user interface and speed.

"Simple and not a resource hog."

    March 18, 2012  |   By flyer25

    Version: Sponge 3.1.3721

    Pros

Simple. Interface is and to the point. Also not invasive. And of course, FREE.

    Cons

Maybe too simple. Some terminology is non standard.

    Summary

As far as optimization for XP it seems to leave a bit to be desired. Main menu's and the right mouse click menu does not offer a standerdized interface as to deletion of headers. Re-displaying of previously removed headers was a chore. It did, however, remove headers as a fumction of clearing resources, but after comparing sponge to Xnews, I opted for Xnews.

    "Absolutely useless"

    September 4, 2011  |   By caladan607

    Version: Sponge 3.1.3721

    Pros

    Easy to setup. Too easy!

    Cons

You must know the names of your newsgroups as there is no search function or help of any kind. They think we're all walking computers or mind readers. VERY UNintuitive!

    Summary

Very shallow, unintuitive, incomprehensible, useless in many ways.

    "Incomprehensible"

    January 4, 2011  |   By Geoff Sjostrom

    Version: Sponge 3.1.3721

    Pros

Since I couldn't get it to work, I have nothing good to say.

    Cons

Interface made no sense to me.

    Summary

I couldn't get it to work. I don't know if it's a problem with Windows 7 or something else, but after downloading all of the groups in a news server I couldn't get them to appear anywhere.
