Snagit for Mac lets you easily capture screenshots and videos anytime you need through the app's intuitive interface. The compact controls are always available on the side of your screen, and you just have to select the kind of shot you want, and you're good to go.

Pros

Handy controls: Anytime you want to access Snagit for Mac, all you have to do is hover your cursor over the right-hand edge of your screen, and the compact control panel will pop up. From there, you can either select photo or video and go from there, or you can open up the app's main interface window for more options.

Integrated sharing: After you've captured and edited your image or clip, you can export it in several different ways straight from the app. For instance, you can upload a video to YouTube, post it to Facebook or Twitter, or email it to a friend or colleague.

Editing tools: There are tons of editing tools in this program, many of which are designed to help you make top-notch video tutorials or instructional videos. You can add page break effects, manage shadows, crop images, and add text bubbles in a variety of shapes and sizes to help you convey exactly what you need to.

Cons

Text bugs: When we tested the text bubbles, they didn't always produce writing that was of a legible size. No matter how large we made the font in those instances, the writing remained tiny. However, leaving the image we were working on and starting over eliminated the problem.

Bottom Line

Snagit is an intuitive tool that can help you take all kinds of screen shots for personal and professional use. It's free to try for the first ten image saves, and if you'd like to keep using it after that, you'll have to pay $5.99 to upgrade to the full version.

Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Snagit for Mac 3.0.

    "Has malware"

    February 27, 2014   |   By mtildz

    Version: Snagit 2.2

    Pros

great software. does everything you expect it to do as a video capture software.

    Cons

    Price to buy is high.
Worst part is that there is malware that changes your homepage to Yahoo and adds all sorts of products that you may NOT want but so long as you use their software, it will ccntinue to change everything for you.

    Summary

    try something else.

    "A great Windows tool ruined"

    April 15, 2012   |   By lilypaddy

    Version: Snagit 2.0

    Pros

One-click options for saving to various social media

    Cons

    Frustrating, dumbed-down interface
Ruined a good thing from older Windows versions
No easy workflow (that I could find) for quick capture and save to various file formats
    No "profiles" feature
Too expensive for what I would use it for

    Summary

I have used SnagIt on Windows for many years for work, and have always loved its ease of use. The interface of earlier Windows versions wasn't the prettiest, but it was clear and easy to figure out. It gave you exactly the control you needed to do exactly what you wanted. If you didn't need to edit after capturing, you simply clicked "Finish capture" and you were done. Settings were simple: you chose clipboard or your location for file saving and the output type. You could save any combination of your preferences as a profile, and you could have several profiles.

When I got a Mac for home use and found the Mac OS built in screen capture lacking, naturally I turned to SnagIt. I have never been so disappointed. Sure, the interface is "sexy" and minimalist now. But I was unable to get up and running quickly, possibly, I admit, because I was mentally stuck with their old paradigm. However, it really shouldn't be quite so hard to figure out.

The dumbed down "All in One" capture that always took me to the editor, without an obvious way of then simply choosing a file location and format to save, frustrated and irritated me. Viewing the basic tutorials frustrated me even more, because they addressed "capturing" without ever addressing what you do after you have captured.

It seems that in trying to make the editing of screen captures more accessible, this version of SnagIt has lost usability in the most simple workflow of capture + save.

I don't find the Mac version of SnagIt usable, and am certainly not paying $49.95 for it. I'm going to be looking for freeware.

"More sad cripple-ware for the Mac"

    July 05, 2011   |   By freejak_dotmac

    Version: Snagit 1.0

    Pros

    Built-in editor

    Cons

Features of the original Windows version do not exist
    Expensive

    Summary

I have used the Windows version of Snagit (through VMWare Fusion) for several years. It is a great product. There are many thoughtful and well implemented features.

When I learned that there was to be a native Mac version I was thrilled.

Sadly, this is another case of getting an over-hyped, dumbed down version of a Windows app. (Quickbooks for Mac owners will immediately sympathize.)

One of the simplest, and I would think easy to implement work flows for the Windows version is to save a screen capture as a file. Simple, straightforward, press the hot key, draw around what you want, get a Save dialog. Done.

Not on the Mac version. Now you MUST interact with the editor before you can save a file. Seems to me that the makers are more interested in showing off their baby Photoshop than in serving customers.

I also just love the "well, since I can't answer your question, I'll just answer another one!" approach to customer service, don't you? Before I gave up on even trying to penetrate the Snagit fortress of arrogance, I tried to get an answer to the question "can I save directly to a file?". Someone, somewhere in Marketing is smiling, since instead of just telling me "no" I had to go round and round with blithering email replies about everything except what I was interested in.

If you want or need medium good graphic editing built in to your screen capture tool, this would be fine. If you need to take screen captures all day, saving them as is for your use in other apps, this is not the way to go.

    I so wish it were...

"A good tool but too expensive"

    January 03, 2011   |   By Johnny LeBlanc

    Version: Snagit 1.0

    Pros

Has good features for making annotations and marking up screen shots.
    User friendly.

    Cons

Overpriced for what you get from this product.
Lacks a couple of features such as "Spot Light" (Select Area and darken outside of selection) and ability to put sequence numbers for instruction steps

    Summary

Snagit has some really nice features but needs to add a few more. There are other products that are very close to the same and are free. I would pay a fair price, say <$20 but to me this product is way overpriced.

    "Easy alerts and reminders"

    November 19, 2010   |   By kelly94111

    Version: Snagit 1.0

    Pros

Can quickly add note for a reminder.

    Cons

Too expensive. One week trial was not enough time to learn not to live without it. I can live without it, I think.

    Summary

Easy to use, but too much to purchase. $9.99 would work.

"I prefer Capture Me. It's free."

    November 17, 2010   |   By bhawbaker

    Version: Snagit 1.0

    Pros

It was OK to play with, not so much to pay for to keep.

    Cons

    $49.95 is too much.

    Summary

If all you need is a screen capture tool, this is way more than you need, and too expensive. It's more effective to capture the image you want and edit it with your favorite graphics tool.

"Great Beta! Looking forward to full release"

    November 01, 2010   |   By BoyBayou

    Version: Snagit beta

    Pros

It's much cleaner, sleeker then the Windows version. Really nice!

    Cons

    Well, it's a beta - so it's not a finished product..but it shows a LOT of promise

    Summary

Ignore the negative reviews - folks are complaining about the license. I downloaded from publishers website - no limitations, full beta release. I am very impressed - am a long time Windows user. This is better!
