"A great Windows tool ruined"
Version: Snagit 2.0
Pros
One-click options for saving to various social media
Cons
Frustrating, dumbed-down interface
Ruined a good thing from older Windows versions
No easy workflow (that I could find) for quick capture and save to various file formats
No "profiles" feature
Too expensive for what I would use it forSummary
I have used SnagIt on Windows for many years for work, and have always loved its ease of use. The interface of earlier Windows versions wasn't the prettiest, but it was clear and easy to figure out. It gave you exactly the control you needed to do exactly what you wanted. If you didn't need to edit after capturing, you simply clicked "Finish capture" and you were done. Settings were simple: you chose clipboard or your location for file saving and the output type. You could save any combination of your preferences as a profile, and you could have several profiles.
When I got a Mac for home use and found the Mac OS built in screen capture lacking, naturally I turned to SnagIt. I have never been so disappointed. Sure, the interface is "sexy" and minimalist now. But I was unable to get up and running quickly, possibly, I admit, because I was mentally stuck with their old paradigm. However, it really shouldn't be quite so hard to figure out.
The dumbed down "All in One" capture that always took me to the editor, without an obvious way of then simply choosing a file location and format to save, frustrated and irritated me. Viewing the basic tutorials frustrated me even more, because they addressed "capturing" without ever addressing what you do after you have captured.
It seems that in trying to make the editing of screen captures more accessible, this version of SnagIt has lost usability in the most simple workflow of capture + save.
I don't find the Mac version of SnagIt usable, and am certainly not paying $49.95 for it. I'm going to be looking for freeware.
