How does the music-sharing application Simplify Music (formerly Simplify Media) remotely share the music you have stored on your computer with your iPhone, or with other friends? You start with Simplify Media, a free desktop application for Windows, Mac, and Linux, add a Simplify account, and then layer on iPhone or iPod Touch access with this app. See? Not entirely as simple as the publisher supposes.
Once set up, however, streaming your own music library isn't tough. You'll need to give the programs time to sync; the larger the collection, the more time Simplify Media's servers need. Then, from the iPhone, you'll be able to view your libraries, browsing by song title, genre, and artist. You're also able to create playlists on-the-fly and scrobble songs, the latter if you also use Last.fm. You can expand your musical options even more if you install Simplify Media on multiple computers, or if friends approve you as part of their network.
The catch, of course, is that the computers must be on for you to get to the music. Also, the lyrics feature that was available in previous version has been discontinued, and Simplify Music can't play DRM songs you bought via iTunes. These are disappointments, but the ability to stream your collection over Wi-Fi, 3G, and EDGE without eating up space makes this app a worthwhile investment for music lovers.
