CNET Editors' review
This freeware offers many unusual advantages over standard text editors like Notepad, but its interface is not one of them. Quicknote's atypical, unfamiliar interface and miniscule controls can be a pain to operate. By default, the background color scheme is a sea green, but you can change this, as well as the color, style, and size of the font.
Quicknote also includes a simple drawing tool, and though you can tweak the size of the brush, you can't choose from additional pens or pencils. We did like the ability to create an unlimited number of notes from the main window, and we really appreciated the alarm functionality. This latter feature can't actually play a sound for some reason, but it will launch any application or pop up a reminder message.
The measurement converter seems like an odd addition, but it's nonetheless appreciated. If you can overlook its frustrating design, Quicknote may be worth considering.
Publisher's Description
From JC&MB:
Sometimes you do not need an advanced text processor but a virtual scrapbook to write down an occasional thought, a plan for the day, or an Internet URL. Quicknote is an always-available Notepad tool that lets you type or copy/paste bits of text anytime, demanding no space on your taskbar and as little memory as it can. Whenever you want to write something down that comes to mind, just 'wake up' Quicknote by touching a small line on the top of your screen with the mouse or by pressing shortcut keys. In its resizable window you can jot down your notes and organize them in categories. Beneath the normal text functions, it can convert units, let you directly access frequently run programs, encrypt secret texts, change the system volume by hotkeys, manage windows tasks, and even send notes through a network. It has also a powerful reminder, which can remind you of your notes at certain times, run programs or shutdown automatically your PC.
What's new in this version: Version 5.5 adds new wizard to package Quicknote's settings, notes and reminders to copy to another computer or for backup purposes.
