CNET Editors' review
There are tons of free photo-editing tools out there, and most try to stand out by taking a particular approach to the job. Some offer enough effects and image-processing tools to almost qualify as Photoshop stand-ins. Others focus more on making it as easy as possible to sort and keep track of your snapshots and other digital images. That's the approach taken by PicaJet Photo Manager. While it offers basic image-editing tools, its real mission is to offer maximum organizational capability; it gives you numerous ways to sort, file, and annotate your photos, as well as some interesting extras like free Flickr and Fotki plug-ins and a unique Send-to-Mobile feature for sending images to your cell phone.
One of PicaJet's installation options is to associate it with Windows Explorer, which we selected. The program's sleekly skinned interface includes a modified tree view with an interesting paper-clip-like function. We added some photos via the Import command, which not only accesses system folders but also scanners, digital cameras, and CD/DVDs. PicaJet also imports all available image information, including image keywords from the source site displayed in their original language. We were impressed with the range of options PicaJet gave us for organizing our images. We were able to tag, sort, and edit images by date, size, and name, of course, but also Imported Time, EXIF data, Caption, DPI, and more. Though it doesn't offer a lot of fancy tools for modifying images, it does have a Fix Image tool that let us easily adjust hue, saturation, contrast; sharpen, blur, and crop the image; fix red-eye, and more. It also has batch resize and conversion tools. In fact, while PicaJet claims not to offer much in the way of image editing, it actually packs most of the tools most users need most of the time. It even has some neat extras, such as slideshows, skins, and a Web Photo Gallery feature that made it easy to set up and export Web-based galleries.
PicaJet is one of the better photo organizers we've encountered at any price, and one of the very best by virtue of the fact that it's freeware. While its core competency is organization, it actually packs more useful image-modifying tools than it lets on, and in an easy-to-use package.

"Simple, straightforward & speedy."
Version: PicaJet 2.6 build 637
Pros
Easy to use, intuitive and a good basic indexing system.
Cons
The free edition is limited to one level of sub-categories.
Summary
As well as being a 'taster' for the full program. this 'lite' version is very useful as it is. It will find photo files in all or specified folders and place them in specific folders created for the purpose. It enables views of different sizes as well as bulk transfers.
An excellent, basic photo sorting program. -
"The best free photo organizer"
Version: PicaJet 2.6
Pros
I have tried many free thumbnail programs and this is by far the best. You can sort by date, date imported, and there are dozens of options.
Cons
None so far! I.m running a pretty heavy duty system, with lots of memory, a fast processor, and a descent video card (only cost me $75). Remember that any photo application will only run as fast as your system can handle.
Summary
If you need an easy to use photo organizer, this is the app. Very intuitive, intelligently designed, attractive UI, and bug free on Windows 7 64bit. I love the sort by date function, which shows you all of your photos in the order that they were taken. You can open photos with an external editor, and if you double click on an open thumb, it brings you back to the library!

"Where's the Vista support?"
Version: PicaJet 2.5 build 495
Pros
See Cons...
Cons
I can't use the program. It won't run.
Summary
I'm running Vista Home Premium SP2, and after installing it, I tried starting the program, and Windows instantly told me the program had caused a problem and needed to be closed. After I dismissed that window, a DEP balloon popped up. So yeah ... where's the Vista support they claim to have on this listing?

"Good features, completely unusable"
Version: PicaJet 2.5 build 495
Pros
Good feature set.
Cons
Extremely unstable and bug-ridden. No support for second monitor. Buggy install and import process. Doesn't actually support Canon raw images, despite promises otherwise. Doesn't support Canon's auto-rotate flags; requires manual rotate (unlike Picasa, iView, iPhoto, etc). Sometimes AVIs from Canon cameras work, sometimes they don't, depending upon..., who knows? time of day? color? Painfully slow import process (approx 2x-5x as long as Picasa for mixed jpg, cr2, avi folder). Considering this is 2.5, build 495, it's not clear how many hundreds of additional builds will be necessary to get this thing right.
-
"Somewhat unstable!"
Version: PicaJet 2.5 build 495
Cons
The program locks up sometimes.
-
"Did _almost_ everything is said it would."
Version: PicaJet 2.5. build 480
Pros
I was specifically looking for something that I could rate pictures with (this does). It's relatively intuitive, and pretty to look at.
Cons
I was really frustrated after reading the Publisher's description which says you can "view your images by rating" to go through the hassle of importing all my photos (7,000+) and rating a 300 photo shoot I just finished, to find out that actually, no, you can't sort by rating, you have to buy the full version for that. Shame on the Publishers for claiming to do something they don't.
-
"I was in real need of this program and at a great price!"
Version: PicaJet 2.5. build 480
Pros
I have many photos and they keep coming in from the family. Three of us and to the collection and I'm able to manage them quite well.
-
"Froze up, does not offer burn to cd/dvd unless $"
Version: PicaJet 2.5. build 477
Pros
none
Cons
they will not tell you that you can not burn to cd/dvd,without $ upgrade, so I will tell you, you cannot burn
-

Cons
Unable to run as it crashed everytime i tried to start it
-
