PatchCleaner is a free utility developed by HomeDev to help Windows users effortlessly recover storage space often consumed by leftover patch files. As operating systems evolve, updates frequently leave behind residual data that can accumulate into clutter over time. This straightforward, lightweight tool offers a targeted solution to this common problem.

Unlike more general system optimizers such as CCleaner, which offer a broad suite of cleaning options including temporary file removal and registry fixes, PatchCleaner concentrates solely on update-related files. It’s an ideal companion for users seeking a precise and efficient method to tidy up their post-update system.

Targeted cleaning

The primary function of PatchCleaner is to scan for unneeded files created during Windows updates. When Windows installs updates, it often leaves behind residual files that are no longer necessary. These files can accumulate over time, taking up substantial disk space. PatchCleaner identifies these files and categorizes them, providing users with a clear overview of what can be safely removed.

The specialized tool allows users to customize their cleaning process. Users can choose to review files before deletion or automatically clean up based on predefined settings. This flexibility ensures that users have control over what is being removed, making it suitable for both novice and experienced users.

It also features a clean, intuitive interface that simplifies the cleaning process. Users can quickly initiate a scan, view the results, and select files for removal with just a few clicks. The tool provides detailed information about the files detected, including their locations and sizes, making it easy for users to make informed decisions.

While the application is a highly effective tool for managing patch files, it may not appeal to users looking for a comprehensive system cleaning solution. Unlike all-in-one cleaners, PatchCleaner does not include features for removing temporary files, browser caches, or managing startup applications.

Developer’s Description

Clean up Windows Installer directory and free up disk space.
PatchCleaner is a utility designed to clean up Windows Installer directory and free up disk space. When applications are installed and updated on the Windows Operating System a hidden directory "c:\Windows\Installer" is used to store the installer (. msi) files and the patch (msp) files. These files are important as during updating, patching or uninstalling software. If you blanketly delete all the files in this folder, you will find yourself needing to rebuild windows. Over time as your computer is patched and patched again, these installer files become outdated and orphaned. They are no longer required, but they can take up many gigabytes of data. PatchCleaner identifies these redundant/orphaned files and allows you to either, move them to another location; or Delete them. You will reclaim GB's of space. Most users of older machines reclaim between 5Gb and 10Gb, the best I have seen reported is over 20 Gb.
