• Excellent, despite a few rough edges

  Very simple and versatile to use. For the most part it does exactly what it says. Contrary to what another reviewer writes, it automatically replicates your Outlook file structure and stores attachments in folders of the same names, replacing them in the email with shortcuts, so they open with a click just as before. This also means that if Kopf ever becomes unavailable, e.g. after you upgrade to a newer version of Outlook, or another email package, you should still be able to access your attachments. Attachments can be reinstated on demand, which could be useful before migrating, or when forwarding an email. You can specify what folder attachments are stored in. You choose precisely which attachments are extracted, e.g. by individual email message, folder, or message size. Contrary to one review, it does not convert the email format to text format.

  Cons

  Outlook 2003 blocks access to the shortcut (.lnk) files that replace the attachments, but only after a few hours, so at first all looks fine. You need to be aware that you can download a small program called Kopf Security Configurator from the same site, which you can use to unblock access to .lnk files. (It does this by making a small change for the Registry for you, which is probably much safer for most people than attempting to edit it themselves.) While processing, Kopf displays a log of the files it is working on, but if it is processing more than about a dozen this does not scroll, so the end of the log is not visible, and it is not clear when it has finished. If you later delete the email with extracted attachments, the attachments will not be deleted. The screen to reinstate attachments has a tick box option to delete the attachments after doing this, but it does not work. Pictures embedded in the email's text are removed and replaced with shortcuts.

  Summary

  Seems brilliant for a free package, at least as good as one that you pay for. If you are happy, send a donation!

  Pros

  Removed attachments from emails as advertised

  Cons

  1- It changes all of the emails it removed the attachments from to plain text, which made them look horrible (I may need to forward one of these emails in the future). 2- It dumps all of the files in one directory. I manage a folder structure with all related documents organized together, changing the folder in the dialog box for each email would be more cumbersome than saving each attachment myself.

  Summary

  I've used macros in the past that popped up a dialog box to choose the destination for each file, saved it, then wrote the file name in the email without affecting the email formatting. My new workplace prohibits the use of macros so that's not an option, this program as much as it does what it promises, it still needs some spit & polish.

  Pros

  Light, easy and does what it is suppose to do. My mailbox decrease to half of the size.

  Cons

  Apparently (not sure if it is linked to the Exchange server from my work) it can only process up to 1000 mails in a shot. Not a blocker though as I usually process it only in the big emails.

  Pros

  Its free and it can move your attachments and it seamed to work fine at the beginning,

  Cons

  Now I (and people I have recommended it to) have the problem that if you choose for attachments to be replaced by links, the link gets an extra dot at the end of the filename so outlook blockes all attachments due to double file extension.

  I won't recommand using it.

  Great way of saving photos sent by email, also good for saving pdfs.Liked this programme means no lost attachments when clearing out old emails.

  Pros

  - FREE - works almost as advertised (see summary) - reasonably fast and tells you what it is doing - uses file links or inserts hyperlinks - can restore attachments when forwarding message - can put attachments back in message (but a bug exists)

  Cons

  - cannot run automatically, incoming mail keeps attachments until you remove them. - (bug) doesn't reinsert attachment if you used the hyperlink option (file link works great)

  Summary

  My current year PST file is 936MB, after doing A LOT of manual cleaning. I get a lot of attachments. This tool is very good considering its price :-) I let it run just before going to a meeting. When I returned, it had finished. I found hundreds of new files in the directory I said to use for attachments, laid out to match the folder structure in my archive. I then did a folder compress on the archive PST, and now it is 804MB. I can detach an entire folder subtree in one operation (like just before going to a meeting). If you attempt to forward a message, the tool recognizes it detached things and offers to reattach them. The only bug I found was replacing attachments with hyperlinks: if you do, the reattach option doesn't put the attachments back in the message. Personally, I prefer file links and that worked great! My biggest problem was that the tool runs much, much slower on really big folders. It was quite speedy on folders with upwards of 700 messages. It processed at a little less than 1 msg/second on a folder with 14000 messages in it. In this case, it was faster to have Outlook show the messages by size, then process the huge ones in small piles (this version of the tool lets you select groups of messages to process, unlike the 0.9x version). The tool can be a little confusing as the indicated attachment size in the message doesn't get updated immediately. Once I went to a couple different messages then back to the one I processed, though, it showed each attachment as 4KB (the size of a file link). The tool will renumber attachments with name conflicts, or automatically overwrite the existing file, or ask you which to do depending on what option you set up. It would be nice if it handled incoming messages automatically. I don't consider that a big deal though; if I want to keep a message it goes into my archive so the system doesn't spend time detaching stuff that I end up throwing away. I set a recurring Outlook task to remind me to run the tool each month. Boy, it sure is nice having a small PST file again!

  Pros

  I was able to remove any attachments in my Inbox at one time. Removed over 500MB of attachments. This lets you replace the attachment with a link so you're not searching for the file. Saves attachments in sub-folders.

  Cons

  If you have multiple emails with the same attachment, you have to either rename each one with a number on the end or manually select which ones to overwrite. That's a problem if you have lots of attachments. You do have to run this manually.

  Summary

  I suggest creating the Attachments folder before running. Program won't let you create the folder while running. That's my other con, but I ran out of room. This saved me a lot of space in my ost file. About 500MB, which was a huge deal for me, considering I was over 2GB...with archiving. I like that it's free, but has the option to donate, which I will gladly do! But I highly suggest 2.0 since this version seems to have some issues that they have resolved.

• Only Removes Attacchments from "Messages"

  Pros

  Outlook Attachment Remover removes & saves attachments on email messages only. It allows you to choose where you prefer to save the attachements.

  Cons

  FYI - I'm only speaking for Outlook 2007 for the following: <p> <p>Outlook Attachment Remover does NOT apply to attachments sent with Outlook Invitations. <p> <p>Outlook Attachment Remover cannot be added to a custom Rule/Alert, so it must be run manually. <p> <p>You cannot remove attachments in bulk. Meaning that you cannot highlight multiple messages to remove the attachements from all the messages; you must remove the attachments one message at a time. However, you don't actually have to open the message; it can be done from the 'short menu' w/ your opposite mouse click.
