    "Restore UI Speed Unusably Slow"

    June 23, 2014   |   By jwwicks

    Version: NovaBackup Professional 16.0

    Pros

Relatively clear cut interface. Backup media works and eventually does what it's supposed to do. Recovery disk easy to setup. The actual restore/backup speed is relatively quick.

    Cons

Bought a 3 PC license v16.0 and I backed up a 360GB HD that was was giving a SMART warning in my HP laptop. No issues creating the backups or recovery images. Restoring however to a 1TB drive failed, even with device independent restore set. I chalked this up to a difference in drive sizes and decided to just reinstall the OS from scratch and restore my files from the backup.

The problem with this is that the interface for restoring individual files and directories is unusably slow. navigating to the directory or set of files can sometimes take over 10 minutes to refresh the screen. Restoring individual files to another location also creates unneeded paths/folders in the target location. For example, restoring files from c\users\me\docs to c\users\you\docs creates subfolders c\users\you\c\users\me\docs.

Also updates for the software only provided for short time, one month, unless you buy an premium upgrade.

    Online storage solutions/providers very limited.

    Summary

I bought this product because Top10Reviews had it listed as #1. Normally they have good reviews but this one's an epic fail. I have no idea how they could be #1 for 5 years.

Bottom line I'm asking for my money back using the 30 day guarantee and going with another product.

    "NOT User Friendly"

    May 28, 2014   |   By meanderingman

    Version: NovaBackup Professional 15

    Pros

When I finally (after about a month) figured out what I wanted to do--Disaster Recovery--I liked the way it worked.

    Cons

Initially, backups failed and gave error message; after some help, backups completed. A Wizard gave some choices--I chose "back up everything", expecting to back up my hard drive to an external hard drive. Later, the backups were taking 12 hours because it was backing up both drives. My attempt to make a Disaster Recovery Disk was a nightmare--never did figure it out. After 2 months of struggling with the program, I gave up and abandoned it. I have had very few problems with other programs

    Summary

I chose this backup program after seeing it was top rated on Top Ten Reviews; most of their top rated programs have turned out to be very good.
    I began with v15, upgraded to v16.
NOT intuitive or user friendly. Difficult to understand and use. Frustrating. I gave up on the program after two months of struggling with it.

"Great and simple to use System Back-Up Program"

    March 05, 2014   |   By graham.hyatt

    Version: NovaBackup Professional 15

    Pros

I'm not at all technically minded, and because I'm paranoid have several modern back-up programs to save my systems. Generally they require a certain amount of understanding of what to back up and how to go about it.

This latest Nova 15 version will back up the whole shebang without the least complication, and without any of the errors others tend to end up with.

The only improvement Nova can make, in my opinion, is to come up with USB10, or similar, to speed up the job. Unlike Imaging programs, all regular backup programs take some hours to run their course, and I am happy to accept that.

    Cons

    None whatsoever!

    Summary

This is the only 'simple to use' backup program I've got, or ever had, and the only one I'd ever recommend to my equally everyday non-techy type - friends/relatives.

    Updated on Mar 5, 2014

Sorry, but I forgot to mention that in my review today, I was writing about the latest Version of Nova Backup Professional, Version 15.
I was less impressed by earlier versions, though I believe the ones I've had were always worth 3 stars minimum. They were not as simple as V 15.

    "Very good product!"

    September 12, 2013   |   By popichak

    Version: NovaBackup Professional 14.5.21

    Pros

Once set up, it works automatically to back up your important data! A lifesaver when you have a hard drive crash.

    Cons

VERY OBTUSE updating. Could be a more user-friendly interface.

    Summary

I would buy this again without hesitation!

""Best backup - Do it yourself" (Version 14.5.21)"

    August 26, 2013   |   By Paula_GER

    Version: NovaBackup Professional 14.5.21

    Pros

If you want to be sure, you can still access your data, in case your PC breaks down, this product is my recommendation. Simply install and start it and it will tell you what to do. Give the functions promoted on top level a try. They will make sure you are well protected against accidental file deletion as well as against hardware failure (worst case scenario, I would claim). In comparison with other products I have tested I prefer Nova backup, because it does not hide its features and does not require you to search the manual before you can do a backup or a system image.

    Cons

Actually, I don't like the grey in the GUI background. And there are some odd bits and pieces here and there, but nothing that really ever bothered me seriously.

    Summary

Solid, stable product. If you need something to rely on, this is my recommendation.

"Does all that I need for backup, at the right price."

    August 13, 2013   |   By darknois

    Version: NovaBackup Professional 14.5.21

    Pros

Affordable, full/differential/incremental file backup, does system disaster recovery to different types of computers. Works with Windows 8, and backs up reasonably fast. Supported my NAS drive without any problems.

    Cons

User interface could use an update.

    Summary

While there are probably products on the market with more bells & whistles, NovaBackup Pro did the job for me, quickly and affordably.
It was at least as fast as other programs I've used, and their support is in the US. I recommend giving it a try.

    "Very sub-standard product."

    May 23, 2013   |   By Fitzee75

    Version: NovaBackup Professional 14.5.21

    Pros

    Basic backup/restore tasks work sometimes.

    Cons

    * Ugly, ugly interface - these guys know nothing about UI design
    * Amazon S3 integration is rubbish - I get "network connection" disconnected half-way through a 6GB backup even though my internet is fine. For f$%#'s sake, it's HTTP PUTS... how hard can it be?
    * The disaster recovery feature is a joke; appears to create the image; immediately becomes a drink coaster after trying to restore!

    Summary

    Bleh...

"Barely works and missing key features"

    April 30, 2013   |   By Cable2001a

    Version: NovaBackup Professional 14.1

    Pros

It does eventually create backup files

    Cons

    Not a user friendly interface
    Non-existent customer support
    Poor documentation
    Slow
    Cannot prune old backups
Cannot save jobs to network location

    Summary

I had all kinds of problems getting the backups to schedule. I kept getting errors saying that the network permissions weren't right (they were) and their tech support refused to assist unless I updated from the free version included with a Buffalo NAS. I finally figured out that only the backup files could be saved to the network. The backup job settings have to be saved locally.

This version of the software also doesn't include the ability to prune old backups. Backup files will continue to accumulate until you manually delete them. Not any more useful than Windows backup.

"DON'T DO IT ! This is crapware."

    April 19, 2013

    Version: NovaBackup Professional 14.1

    Pros

Great design, too bad nothing works. Offers local, network, cloud, Amazon S3 backups.

    Cons

Chronic failures, buggy like you won't believe, and unreliable. What is fixed in one release becomes unfixed in the next. There is never a version that works. Much of the functionality we paid for simply doesn't work, and you often learn that only when you need it to work.

    Summary

I've owned three versions of this software (starting with v12 and including the most recent, v14.5), and paid for two. I've returned another because of the types of problems here. I will not give them any more money so that they can give me grief.

Very simply, this company does not have adequate programming competency to implement a very good software design. They do not test their product before rushing out the door. And they do not provide effective support despite their claims. The result is faulty cripple ware in a situation, in backup software, you need 99.99% reliability.

    Examples are plentiful:

In version v14.1, the software ceased to work with my DVD drives. I could no longer do anything with DVDs thru their software tho all other programs continued to work properly. Their support ended at "uninstall & reinstall," which didn't correct the problem (cause the problem is their software, not my hardware). For much of a year, I lived without DVD backups.

In v14.0, the Disaster Recover module simply didn't work. AT ALL. As soon as I tried to access it, it would hang. Every time. That was fixed in v14.1, but now in the latest & greatest, v14.5, the original problem occurs again when you try to implement the WinPE disaster recovery boot disk. Tech support had no clue then, and no clue now.

v14 introduced "virus scanning," or so it claimed. I've never seen any evidence of actual scanning. What I have seen is near-chronic "anti-virus dll missing" errors that others have reported as well. Their solution -- delete 3 program files -- doesn't solve the problem and makes no sense anyway.

If you read what they have supposedly "fixed" in current & recent versions, you'll be shocked to see the type of problems other users of this crapware face. Like the software truncating encryption keys without notice, so that users cannot access or restore backups when needed. Ditto for the xSP online backup setup.

The software relys upon Microsoft's Shadow Volume Copy service, which can be problematic. My experience for all the time I've used this crapware is that if and only if Nova is the first backup since boot, then it will successfully create a shadow copy of files in use and my key data files will thus be protected. Otherwise, you get an error simply saying it couldn't create a shadow copy (but not why). Tech support if of no help.

If a backup location (such as a USB drive fills up), the crapware doesn't say this. It tells you instead that the user cancelled the job.

Its log file gives you the option to see detail or not. But it isn't smart enough to get the right details. So if you want to see error messages for what files have not been backed up, you have to read thru thousands of listings of files successfully backed up. Its just dumb: working by exception, you'd want to see only the problems (errors). But that's impossible with this software.

I could go on - I have pages of problems that have gone unsolved since I first used this software 2 years ago.

Good file-level backup software is hard to find these days. My suggest is Norton Ghost, something I have continued to rely on for many years. It is nearly 100% reliable, and has saved my bacon many times when Windows would not boot. But it uses image backup technology which is overkill when you simply want to copy data files that change rapidly.

    "Bad Experiences and getting worse"

    April 08, 2013   |   By bmsoITguy

    Version: NovaBackup Professional 14.1

    Pros

It runs ... that is all

    Cons

Back ups failed when active directyory was running...
    Removed Active Directory runs...
    But still getting 'warnings'
with no descriptions as to how to fix said files for backing up...
Attempted a restore from a Backup and that Failed again no description as to how to fix....
    Getting
    Exemption Failures and crashing...

    Summary

So far a Less then stellar performance I got better support from one of their compettiors on a trial run...
Best thing I can suggest is shop around there are better pieces of software in exsistance. The Less then stellar review comes at a price this can cost some one their job and worse then that it can cost them their company(especially if the system being backed up has the information for that company). I say this to NovaStore your lucky no one has come after you for damages, yet!
