NPE is not installed in the computer; it's simply an executable file that scans the computer for "crimeware" that anti-virus software may miss. These files can be deeply embedded and difficult to remove such as root-kits. NPE performs very fast.
Cons
I did not find any negative aspects of the program but I was unable to determine how the program responds and reports when a dangerous file is found because none were ever encountered on my computer.
Summary
I would recommend Norton Power Eraser as a complement to anti-virus programs because of its ability to detect and eliminate dangerous files, especially root-kits. As a free offering by Symantec, it is not installed in the computer but it's initiated by opening an executable file. The program's data base is frequently updated.
On a badly infected computer, NPE will remove malware that prevents installation of some anti-virus programs and suites. -

When I run Power Eraser, it starts its scan, but quits & gives me error codes. To get support from Symantec, I'd have to pay $99...Even though I've paid for Norton Internet Security, which doesn't find the trojan horse that's infected my computer.
Summary
This may be a great utility, but I'll never know! I downloaded it because Norton Internet Security can't find & remove the trojan horse that's re-directing my browser to pages I don't want to see. All I know for sure is that Power Eraser won't work on my Windows 7 Pro system. And I don't want to spend $99 on technical support that I shouldn't have to pay for! Next security suite I buy will NOT be from Symantec!

Be extremely careful while using it because it might pick up valid programs on your computer as threats.
Summary
To be used after all else has failed, with extreme caution. But when it works, it does wonders. Cleared up a nasty trojan infection on my pc, that no other programs could clear up.

It will often times remove stubborn malware, at least when other programs, like Malwarebytes, might be blocked by the malware.
Cons
It requires a connection to the internet while it scans, but that isn't a big deal.
Summary
Give it a try. It doesn't actually install to your computer, as it is simply run from the .exe file that you download. Whenever you are done using it, simply delete the NPE.exe file.
I remove malware from student computers all the time, as I work at the university I currently attend. Power Eraser is just another tool for the toolbox. You may or may not have luck with it removing what you need it to remove, but it is worth a try.
