Editors' review

Too many music lovers rely on their media player's library and file management features, which too often aren't up to the task of finding, organizing, and even playing all your music files, not just MP3s. Mp3nity is a free all-in-one music file organizer, manager, converter, and even player. It can rip CDs, generate playlists, and convert and compress files. It has some unique tools for managing large numbers of files simultaneously, including editing tags, renaming files, and fetching updated information online.

Mp3nity has an efficient layout that does a good job displaying tons of information, though of course the entire display can be customized. The toolbar has colorful, clearly labeled icons, including an integrated media player that maintained its size and position no matter how we resized the main display, which is a nice touch. We browsed the small tree view to a music archive and opted to select both folder and subfolders, and Mp3nity quickly indexed and displayed the contents in a track information window with active entry fields for easy editing and a larger information window that had tabs for lyrics, pictures, Web links, and more. Right-clicking any song title let us choose a wide range of operations, including an impressive array of options for converting or compressing files. We selected some random titles to play, which the media player did with aplomb. Fetching tags online was fun; a click or two retrieved detailed information on some fairly obscure titles, while another click automatically populated the data. The Auto Update button lets Mp3nity save automatically updated files, and the toolbar also offers built-in controls for parsing files and exporting tables.

The only issue we encountered with Mp3nity was with older MPEG 1.0 and 2.0 files, which we could neither play nor convert with Mp3nity, thought they played fine in VLC media player. This only affected maybe four or five files out of thousands, so it's about as minor as quibbles get, and it's more than made up by Mp3nity's many advantages. We particularly liked the capability to quickly select directories from the tree view since we like to keep the actual data files in several locations. It also had no trouble playing our AAC files, so iTunes users should find it easy to switch.

"Easy to use and does the job"

    November 19, 2012   |   By arlin1976

    Version: Mp3nity 2.2.020

    Pros

This program, although not fool proof, is pretty straight forward as far as managing tags/art/lyrics goes. There are some more advanced features but I'm not that into it, I would surmise based on its simple options that these too are probably good

    Cons

There are some features which I didn't know the purpose for and may have benefited from them had their been some help bubbles or similar

    Summary

Free, easy, awesome! If you want to manage your MP3 library you could do a lot worse than to give this a try.

"Cant get lyrics - Server constantly overloaded"

    July 08, 2012   |   By Homensenome

    Version: Mp3nity 2.2.016

    Pros

Nothing much - it does display details but so does all other players

    Cons

Nothing much - it did not work for me as all I wanted was to get some lyrics

    Summary

Tried to get lyrics but no matter when I tried (morning, afternoon or evenings invariably I got an warning:

"Lyrics Search Service temporary shut down due to overload - Please wait a moment before trying again".

This never changed and I waited days and still could not get any lyrics, either individually or in batch.

I don't know how cnet rated it so highly! Deleating this program now

"Trial Version not "free" as stated"

    June 13, 2012   |   By The Yoder

    Version: Mp3nity 2.2.016

    Pros

Does well when all the features are enabled. Crashes on manual look-up from time to time. Will grab artwork and lyrics. Many levels of customization and includes macros (I didn't try to use these)

    Cons

This company keeps stating that it is free with full features, that is true of the first 30 days. After that you lose the ability to rip from CD along with other features. After 30 you also lose the ability to use Amazon and Musicbrainz(SP?) for tagging, that leaves you with only FreeCDDB for your source and that DB misses the boat more often than not for various artists CDs. Other reviews of the companies customer service are negative, although I didn't deal with them personally as I will not purchase the product. If the publisher wasn't misleading (continually) about the trial nature of the program I would have happily paid the 20 bucks for it.

    Summary

Too bad they weren't upfront about the fact you are downloading a trial version, otherwise they would have gotten 4 or 5 stars from me as the program itself is better than any other ripping / tagging program I have used. The publisher will claim that the program is only for tagging (thus why they call it free). In my experience when you have a large collection it is far better to get all the tags/pictures/lyrics right when you rip it then to go back with an editor only after the fact.

"This is 'the one' to clean up your mp3 tags."

    May 13, 2012   |   By Richboy19

    Version: Mp3nity 2.2.016

    Pros

Easy and simple to use right off the bat. Fully customizable macros, you can make this program do almost anything you want.

    Cons

For the free version, the online databases are pretty weak, if you are trying to 'auto-tag' albums from the internet. Maybe the paid version is better.

    Summary

I downloaded a lot of tag editors, and although they may have been functional, the user interfaces were just absolutely horrible. This one is just awesome. I used it to clean up the tags on my 40GB mp3 collection so that it would not be a mess on my smart phone. I'll die before I let iTunes get its grubby hands on my music.

"Not something I would use myself."

    April 28, 2012   |   By jackingtonjack

    Version: Mp3nity 2.2.016

    Pros

This appeared to look OK and judging by the previews I have read then its well worth trying it out.

    Cons

Not that I have anything to add here as this software was for someone else's laptop and I have not heard any complaints from them so I presume that they are either happy with it or have removed it.

    Summary

My overall review is based entirely on reading the editor/user reviews and not based on the actual usage of the software
To summarize this all I can add is that if it is something that you need then download it and try it out.It is very easily removed if it is not up to the expectations of the user.
There is many tools free and paid that will remove this item and they are all available from CNet.com

    "What a nice great software!"

    January 06, 2012   |   By Normadof

    Version: Mp3nity 2.2.015

    Pros

I love how all the necessary tools to organize my mp3s are packed in one program, whenever i download new songs, i get them lyrics, cd covers, credits, rename and move them to my library, and compress them if they're too large... All in one click, in the same window!

    Cons

Software updates are a bit slow.

    "Could not rip a CD."

    January 02, 2012   |   By hefret

    Version: Mp3nity 2.2.015

    Pros

    Didn't get that far.

    Cons

Received a series of unhelpful error messages in trying to rip a CD. Just could not get it to work. Even the command to get CD info failed.

    Summary

After I uninstalled this, I tried another program called FreeRIP on the same laptop/CD and it worked fine. So it was definitely the software.
