"Support is rude."
Version: Medlin Payroll and Accounting 2008
Pros
Most of the time payroll works great. But not all of the time.
Cons
I am so glad it is not just me that had a painful experience with support. Whomever answered my email reminded of Dr. House. Snotty and used metaphors. And yes the program has flaws and can be unstable. Most days it works great. After being a 20 year customer I was thrown under the bus for responding to what I considered a rude support email. So back to google...Find a new program.

"Poor Customer Service, Sometimes Unstable Program"
Version: Medlin Payroll and Accounting 2008
Pros
Inexpensive, accurately calculates payroll and IRS information returns, simple to use.
Cons
1. Must purchase the next year's software or W-2 and W-3 capability is difficult to use. The owner provides a "patch" to the existing year's version for people who do not purchase the latest version. The patch is supposed to allow you to print W-2s and W-3. It's an unstable program that gives unreliable results.
2. I bought the 2012 version but today, after using this software all weekend long to print W-2s and W-3s, and 940s and 941s for clients just fine, it suddenly stopped formatting the printed reports properly. The problem was seen on 3 different printers in my offices. When I asked customer service if they had any ideas what the problem might be, their response was that it could only be my printer. As it turns out, at least 2 of of my clients (across the country in different locations) who have purchased this program and have been using it heavily today, also experienced the problem. I just got off the phone with them.
3. The owner is very rude and defensive about problems.Summary
You get what you pay for. This could be a nifty little program for small businesses especially in these hard economic times, but it has several quirks and you will get no help from customer service.
If you only have a few employees you could use it easily even if you have to download forms from the IRS website and type them in yourself - the numbers given by the program are accurate. But be ware, when the year end comes along you will probably have problems. -
"Corruption of data, bad reports, poor customer service"
Version: Medlin Payroll and Accounting 2008
Pros
Basic payroll program for a great price. Easy to use.
Cons
Will occasionally corrupt data, reports are hard to understand, and the owner of the company is really really rude.
Summary
First off, a good basic payroll program for your money. However, if you have other options and a bigger budget, you should definitely stay away. The report dates are really confusing and not well marked, leading you to wonder if you're looking at payperiod, payroll date, payroll run date, or jsut the day the report was run. Very convoluted. Also, the program occasionally deletes or corrupts data and you have to reinput everything by hand. So frequent backups are definitely a necessity and not just a precaution. The worse offense by far though, is the poor customer service by the owner of the company. As other reviewers have commented, the owner is really rude and condescending when you call regarding anything...even if his program is at fault. If you take up more than one minute of his time, he cuts you off and asks you to submit the question by email, even if he never fully answers your questions by email.
