CNET Editors' review
If you've ever wanted to expand your Mac's capabilities, you probably wondered what--and how much--your machine could handle. This free utility eliminates the guesswork, providing current, comprehensive, and accurate technical specifications on every Mac known to man, from Cupertino's latest right on down to the vintage Macintosh 128K, along with technical information on servers, other Apple devices, and OS software stretching back to System 2.0.1.
Mactracker maintains data on everything from maximum RAM and processor speed to performance benchmarks, expansion slots, firmware, built-in hardware, and more--all in a clean, newly redesigned interface that provides strong search capabilities and customizable, iTunes-style smart categories (so, for example, you could create a search by processor type). Mactracker is also fun for just taking a trip down Mac memory lane: you can flip through models sorted by release year, look up original retail prices (in multiple currencies), see icons for each machine, and even listen to original start-up chime and death chime audio. Mactracker is a must for sysadmins and technicians, and just plain useful--and fun--for anybody else.

"Program hangs when attempting to run."
Version: Mactracker 7.1
Pros
Who knows?
Cons
Program hangs when attempting to open. Don't know whether this is unique to this version. I assume so since the ratings on previous versions is very high. I'm running the Lion OS.
Summary
The program hangs on attempting to open - requires a Force Quit. Thus pretty worthless.
-
"How did I live without this?"
Version: Mactracker 7.1
Pros
Perfection!
Cons
None that I've found so far.
Summary
I've been doing Apple IT for over 20 years and am embarrassed to say I just discovered this app. With Apples ridiculous model identifier, model number and order number, this app just made my whole life a lot easier when trying to figure out which Mac a new client has over the phone.
-
"Essential Mac Hardware database"
Version: Mactracker 7.0.1
Pros
A database of all the hardware apple has ever produced.
Historically interesting but also useful for comparing recent Apple products.
The desktop app mirrors the iOS app faithfully.Cons
When Apple launches new hardware the App can be a bit slow to be updated
Summary
If you own an Apple product and you want to see how it compares to other Apple products then Mactracker will help you out.
-
