Don't listen to "I tried the freeware version. Awful."

Pros
There are three different versions of MDaemon. MDaemon Free, Standard, and Pro. Obviously they come with different features, per the price. MDaemon is very feature rich. Try the fully functional Free Trial to see.

Not any cons on MDaemon Email Server software.

It's advertised to do quite a bit, but I found it completely useless.
Cons
Almost all of the features are disabled in the freeware version. Crippleware with a vengeance. Also, the uninstaller doesn't work properly (Hint: before uninstalling, go into Windows Administrator Tools and disable the service manually).
Summary
Among the cripple-features in the freeware version: you can only use it with one domain. All of the "Security Settings" are also disabled. You should try the completely free hMailServer, which at least at first try seems to work better.

Simple to manage, informative, secure and rock solid. Leader in email messaging technology utilising DKIM and VBR. Easy to backup, replication, migration without specialised costly backup software and plugins. Fantastic support staff.
Cons
None that I can think of at the moment and even when I do, the 'cons' can be addressed by the beta team who listen to users needs and they develop the product with end user input and feedback.
Summary
The Alt-N range of products are some of the best in the world. I have been using MDaemon for over 10 years now and have seen the product grow over that time to be a market leader in secure messaging technology. The support team at Alt-N are top class, quick to respond and easy to deal with. Also, they listen to users needs, with furture products releases focused on not only product improvements, but end user input. No need for advanced backup plugins, backing up MDaemon and restoring in an emergency is by far the simplest I have ever seen. Copy the MDaemon install folder to another computer, run the program installs over the top, enable as a service and it's back up and running in a flash! With MDaemon's advanced messaging security features as well as Anti-SPAM/Anti-Virus add-on, SyncML and Outlook Connector component, you can not look past this product for a COMPLETE email solution and a far better and simpler alternative to Exchange for workstation users to road worriors! I highly recommend MDaemon, give it a try!

Rock solid, feature rich, scalable and not expensive... an absolute dream. Very hard to fault.
Cons
Everything is well organized within the software but it can be hard to remember exactly where the options are in the menus because there are so many of them. This is a good complain though.

Pros
I manage an Exchange Server and an MDaemon server... no comparison. I've never had any trouble out of MDaemon and we've been running it since 1998. Anti-Spyware works great, anti-virus also really works.
