"Fixes to bugs released sporadically!"
Version: Legacy Family Tree 7.5.0.208
Pros
Photo Management
Cons
Fixing of bugs and customer "support".
Summary
The features in Legacy are about average for what you'd expect of a family tree program but there're many more user friendly programs on the market. I use Legacg, FTM, FTB, PAF and CGR depending on what I want to do and which reports I want to run.
But would you trust your family tree data, data that has been collected after years of painstaking research, to a program that does not correctly export to a Gedcom?
Legacy is more concerned with developing new features rather than fixing the bugs in their current version. Below is correspondence with their "support" department when I discovered a bug in the system..a bug they claim to have known about and fixed in Oct 2012 but the fix has not been released as at 6 Feb 2013..

I know exactly what happens.
I'm going to close this discussion. There is nothing more to add. We just have to wait for the programmers to release the next update.

Sherry

Turn the double dating option off, do not enter any double dates in legacy, export the file from Legacy to a gedcom, import that gedcom into PAF and let me know what happens. I use Legacy, PAF, FTM, FTB and CGR..not RM.

My double date as entered in Legacy is 3 Feb 1749/50 and that's what shows in PAF and RootsMagic.

Sherry

I am fully aware of our calender history and the switch from the Julian to the Gregorian calender. Pray tell, when you " did a test and the file imported perfectly into PAF, albeit with the acceptable double dates " what were those 'acceptable' double dates?

It's *not* a corruption. If you read what I wrote about Double Dating as well as the article on Calendar History, it's an accepted way of formatting dates and it should be used to avoid confusion during the change in calendars.
I just did a test and the file imported perfectly into PAF, albeit with the acceptable double dates.

Sherry

Sherry I might be willing to accept the inconvenience of having to reset the double dating option anytime I create a Gedcom but the Exported Gedcom is incorrect and cannot be used in any other program..FTM, PAF Or Complete Genealogy Reporter because of the corrupted data. Someone at Millennia MUST have an answer.

Elmo,
We are never told in advance when a build is going to be released. Please be patient and follow the easy step to reset the option for double dating after creating a gedcom.

Sherry

Jim,
Then how can I go back to the previous build version? I was not experiencing any problems until the last update.
It is somewhat disconcerting using a program that cannot correctly export to a gedcom file...more so, to be made aware that the problem has been fixed since October but not yet released and no indication as to when it will be released.I know that every program ( FTM, PAF, Legacy etc ) each has its own quirks but this bug fundamentally changes the data.
Please advise.
Regards
Peter

Peter,
No, the updates occur at irregular intervals and not by a set schedule. The last one was 14 Sep 2013.

"Download from their site instead of here"
Version: Legacy Family Tree 7.5.0.208
Pros
Fairly easy to use and has many functions. It's better to download it from legacyfamilytree.com than from here, because then you won't have to avoid those sneaky additional software offers, and you have to go to that page anyway and click on the download button in order to come to a page where you type in your email, which will grant you a free code to unlock the program.
Cons
Many functions require buying the deluxe version. For me, however, importing from a gedcom file created in GenealogyJ resulted in an incomplete family tree, with most error reports concerning mislabeling of husbands vs wives.

"Great Program"

Pros
Easy to use and Great Reports
Cons
None that I can think of

"Horrible, don't buy - I did"
Version: Legacy Family Tree 7.5.0.185
Pros
They used to have a nice charting program. Merging program to find duplicates is powerful but has a terrible interface. Program is stable and doesn't crash.
Cons
There are so many - updates pushed out with little consultation with users about features they would like or the interface. The user manual, which is an extra $15 even if you pay for the Deluxe version (which I bought) is not kept up to date wit the features they add randomly. The online help is cryptic, good luck trying to find what you need. There is a lack of a user forum to discuss problems. Tech support takes days and days to respond, if they do at all. Error messages and feedback from the program is cryptic. The entire UI is terrible. The online database functionality links to familysearch.org, which is the LDS Church. I have nothing against the LDS Church, but you cannot search this database unless you are member with the redesign of the familysearch.org website. There is no functionality to find errors in your entered data, it only spits out the linked data that is correct, good luck trying to find stray relatives that don't link and need more research.
Summary
Don'y buy this program, it makes nice charts, but the latest update have even reduced that functionality.

"Found software to be lacking when compared to others."
Version: Legacy Family Tree 7.5.0.154
Pros
Very little to consider as a pro.
Cons
Found software to be wanting in many areas & not intuitive enough to continue using it.
Summary
Did not find this software useful & have since uninstalled it.

"Big Mistake"
Version: Legacy Family Tree 7.5.0.98
Pros
Very detailed program. I can see how it could be an exceptional program for professional genealogists.
Cons
This program is entirely too complicated. In order to make good use of it, you need to take a 3 credit hour course. After I received it, I watched 3 hours of online videos just to be able to perform the most basic functions. It is not easy enough to navigate to be able to check for errors easily and I feel after the first GEDCOME file merge the data is added there are likely to be numerous errors and cannot trust that they will be caught. When I tried to remove the program for reload (so that I wouldn't have to trust a merge) it took 30 minutes to find everything. This program puts its tendrils into your computer like a virus. Now, it won't load the chart function and the only way to restart from scratch seems to be to wipe the entire OS!! Also, this program would be much more useful if I were a mormon and should be advertised that one of their main search functions is for mormons only.
Summary
If I were a professional genealogist I would give it at least 3 to 4 stars. However, whoever uses this program should be prepared to lose A LOT of research time learning how to do the basics of the program. It comes with a 377 page book and needs every page. It makes uploading media seem extremely easy. Unfortunately, all it does is link the "uploaded" media information to its original file. The program itself does not store the media. This means, if you ever need to reload or have any program problems, any media you have attached needs to be done all over again. This programs format could easily cause hours and hours of a persons life to be wasted repeatedly. I am sorely disappointed in this program.

"Didn't finish"
Version: Legacy Family Tree 7.5.0.112
Pros
I didn't finish the download process because it was looking for a password I wasn't sent.
Cons
Why does the program need a password?
Summary
I deleted what part of the program I did have
-
"Excellent product"
Version: Legacy Family Tree 7.5.0.112
Pros

Cons
No problems as yet
Summary

-
"Works well, but some functions are not intuitive"
Version: Legacy Family Tree 7.5.0.112
Pros
Works well.
Cons
Some functions aren't intuitive or quick to figure out
Summary
good free application
-
"An exacting, sometimes presumptive, software."
Version: Legacy Family Tree 7.5.0.112
Pros
Good support
Cons
Too often, information is added to individuals by the Legacy program and for my family it has been rather contradictory to known information. Offering information is fine, but do NOT add information at will.
Summary
If you are serious about Genealogy, it is fine. If you want to follow Legacy's input to facts-go ahead; For fun you might look elsewhere.
