KakaoTalk Messenger is more than a basic chat tool; it combines a number of features and tools to create a communication environment very much like a social network, but with a much greater emphasis on one-on-one and personal conversations. The app is designed for easy access to your contacts, combined with a number of additional tools to enhance your use of the service.
One of the most important things about KakaoTalk is the ability to connect with other users, so before you can use it, you must connect your phone number to an account. This requires a couple of verification steps, but when done, the app can access your contact list and check to see who you know that uses the app. You can then friend them and start chatting. Of course, there is far more to it than that. Chatting can be done in groups, in chat rooms, directly with people on your friend list, or via video or voice chat. You can also find people by ID search, QR code (scanning their phones), or shaking the phone near someone else with an account. Search tools exist, as well, but the dual verification system maintains privacy within the system. Other fun additions like items, themes, and a Plus-Friends list for celebrities and popular users are all welcome features.
It's no wonder that KakaoTalk is becoming increasingly popular with teenagers and younger adults who are jaded by the privacy issues that major social networks like Facebook tend to have. It is quick, mobile, and flexible enough to adjust to how you use the tool. For those that enjoy its use, there are many ways to do so.

KaKaoTalk offers a great VoIP service and it's 100% free regardless of who and where you call. Technically this could save you a lot from your phone bill. The only requirement is that both parties have registered to KaKaoTalk and have a KaKao ID (all free). You can even change your voice to be funny and surprise your friends.
KakaoTalk is also a great IM application allowing you to send voice messages, funny stickers, chats, pictures and more between friends.
Many K-Pop idol groups also have active accounts that you can connect with.
You are required to have a mobile number that you can verify. (You will be texted a verification code upon registering). Free texting apps (e.g. Google Voice, Pinger, etc.) may not be used to verify (this is done to prevent spam).
This service also lacks a video calling feature that is available on some competitor services.
KaKaoTalk is a great app that I would recommend anyone to try out!
The interface is nice, operation is smooth and slick, additional free emoticons (time limited)
Big Fail -- ties you to one phone number on one device. Any change in phone number or device, you have to register again, wiping out your previous chat data. Not good!!! Happened to me when I changed carriers and upgrade my phone. This is a basic no-brainer for a good social messaging app -- the ability to cross multiple devices (phones, ipads etc) with the same ID.
Also I don't see why they have to split the chat messaging app (KakaoTalk) and the microblog (KakaoStory) -- you have to access each separately... where as competitors like WeChat has it all in one.
If they fix the phone/device registering issue (allow multiple numbers and devices), then I would give it 5 stars. Only reason I'm using it is to keep in touch with some friends. IMHO, WeChat and WhatsApp are much better.
Well, I believe you might be wrong on both counts.
First, if you check the settings menu, you can add a username to you account. So when you change numbers, your "data" moves with you. When I say data I mean contract lists... if you are using an iDevice a restore should bring back all your chat logs as well.
Second, having the two apps seperated is the right way to do it. You are assuming that everyone who wants to use the messaging app would also want to use the social networking (blogging) app (and vice versa). Look at Facebook, they separated there messaging "feature" into a separate app. To have everything in one app would make the app bulky and cluttered.
Does just about everything a Chat system should do, including file transfers and group chats.
Strictly tied to your phone number and will delete your account info off of any other devices. With other systems like Google Talk I can have it open on my Phone, Tablet, and PC and answer from whatever device is handy. Cannot do that with Kakao making it very limited use for me (no phone at work so need it on PC, and at home I'm more often with my Tablet.).
Good Chat system but needs to allow access from multiple devices (Phone, Tablet, PC, etc) and should be more readily available across more devices.
