Editors' Review

Right down to the opening music, sound effects, and applause, Jeopardy Deluxe seeks to replicate the experience of the popular, long-lived TV game show on which it's based. This game adds to the immersion by letting you build and name your own avatar, with different options for hair, complexion, clothing, etc., (although the customization is pretty limited, compared with more-complex games), and your avatar reacts appropriately, whether clapping or pumping his or her fists.

The format and flow of the game, as well as the categories and questions, follow the TV show very closely--right down to the Jeopardy, Double Jeopardy, and Final Jeopardy progression--with one major exception: all questions (er, "answers," in Jeopardy-ian argot) are multiple choice, making the game arguably easier than actual Jeopardy. That also influences how you play against computer opponents (set to easy, medium, or hard, with likewise customizable appearance), as speedy responses are rewarded disproportionately. You can also play alone, but the game is at its best when playing with other human players on the same computer, with each person assigned his own response key. Given that Jeopardy has already been done repeatedly for the Mac, it's disappointing to see occasional video glitches and so few innovations (why no online play option, for example?). Still Jeopardy fans will have fun with this game.

"Not bad, but has it's limitations"

 |  Version: Jeopardy Deluxe 1.0.1

Easy, engaging game play; has the feel of the game show, with the same theme music and sound effects; computer-controlled characters adjust to keep the game competitive.

You can't customize your character very well; character graphics and animation quality is poor; no voice of Alex Trebek; answers are multiple-choice

This is an easy-to-play basic trivia game. It's a good game when you want to take a few minutes and relax. Though it carries the Jeopardy name, theme song and sound effects, it differs from the TV show in that you do not answer the questions free-form. Instead you pick from a multiple choice list. Years ago, I played a version that required typing the answer. That was frustrating because you would sometimes lose an answer due to misspelling a word. I would think that a better option would be to let the user choose multiple choice or traditional-style answers. The AI engine could be made good enough to figure out most variations of people's typing.

If you don't mind that limitation, then game play will be fine for you.

Another big complaint is the character graphic quality and animation are really sub-standard for any game made in the last five years. The character rendering is somewhat polygonal and the animations are really robotic. The way the characters clap is really unnatural and even out of sync with the sound effects.

You can customize your character, but the customization options are very limited. You have a choice of only a few hair styles, colors and skin colors and even fewer basic characters. If you are expecting customization like the Sims, you will be severely disappointed. If you were hoping to create a character that even looks kind of like yourself, chances are you'll be unlucky as well.

The bottom-line is that this game works as a basic, multiple-choice trivia game, but falls far short as a replication of the TV show. If you were hoping to play Jeopardy! as though you were on TV, you won't find it here.
