We suggest taking a look at Carolina Road's Jarte, a free, tabbed-based, Word-compatible word processor built upon WordPad. It's fast and reliable, like WordPad, but it adds some features, such as single-click bookmarking, mouse scroll wheel cut-and-paste capability, and dictionary and thesaurus reference tools. Jarte is available in installed and portable versions; there's also a paid upgrade (still less than Word, though). The latest version of Jarte is compatible with Windows 8; we tried it in Windows 7.

Jarte's installer let us choose whether to install some components, such as dictionary and spell checker tools for French, Spanish, Italian, and other languages. As soon as Jarte opened, we could see it's not simply WordPad with a stone wall background theme: It's organized very differently, with a simplified, button-based interface that looks nothing like WordPad's Office-based style. But Jarte offers a lot of options for changing its look, including Compact, Minimal, and Classic Layouts; button labels; tool tips; and a View menu full of Line Guides, Tool Panels, Rulers, Quick Bars, and other display options we could enable with check boxes for a totally customized look. We could also change the background theme and even get more styles online. There's something for everyone, and the NotePad-like Minimal Interface for the hard-to-please.

The acid test: We actually typed "the acid test" in Jarte and saved it as a Word Document (our other choices were rich text and plain text). Our saved document looked like any Word-created file, and it opened normally in Word with a click: We didn't even have to specify a program. Jarte has the format, insert, highlighting, and word count features we expect, and its editing tools didn't let us down, either. We especially like the Format Brush tool. An excellent help file is available, too. The new word on free Word alternatives is "Jarte."

    "Love it so far."

    May 03, 2014   |   By GinnyLee8

    Version: Jarte 5.2

    Pros

Easy & clean to download if you remember click "Decline" for all other software offers.
    Program was easy to navigate.
    "Help" section very useful.
Saves in .rtf, .doc, .txt which is common with most word processing software and lets you change the default format setting if you wish.
Saves in .docx with a Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack

    Cons

    None so far.

    Summary

To get a clean download remember that you can decline all offers for other software and especially do not allow a "Quick" download. Click on the "Custom" download instead, if offered. That said, my Jarte download was clean and went perfectly.

    "Fairly useful"

    August 30, 2013

    Version: Jarte 5.0

    Pros

    Fast
    Useful
    full-screen loading
    distraction free writing
    full features

    Cons

Tries to trick you into installing adware. You have to read very carefully while installing and un-check a couple of boxes not to screw up your search engine settings. I call it tricking you when check boxes are already checked.

    Summary

Obviously, I downloaded this as an alternative to the large Word program, which takes forever to load. most often, you don't need all of its features. Jarte has a good set of necessary features in a quick loading program. I also wanted a distraction free writing environment and a lot of people seemed to like this one, so I'm trying it now. I wrote one document and like it so far.

    "Excellent replacement for word, etc."

    June 20, 2013   |   By william durden

    Version: Jarte 5.0

    Pros

loads quickly, plenty of features, good substitute for more elaborate wp applications.

    Cons

    no cons come to mind...
would be nice to be able to handle images, and maybe a better printer engine.

but don't expect too much of it, and it won't let you down. If you need stuff like images, pagination, outlining, etc. use Word.

"Simple, effective replacement for MS Word"

    June 12, 2013   |   By jpeni

    Version: Jarte 5.0

    Pros

Can open and create .RTF, .DOC and .DOCX files. Contains most of the basic editing functions required.

    Cons

Does not include images when copying pages from browser. Web pages with images and text can be copied to MS Word, but Jarte loses the images. Jarte CAN copy images and text from other documents, though.

    Summary

I use this program as a simple and effective way of opening and creating .RTF, .DOC, .DOCX and .TXT files when bloated MS Word and all its extra functions are NOT required. It also comes in handy when you need a simple document editor and viewer in portable mode (like copying to a DVD for example).

    Updated on Jun 13, 2013

By the way, if you create a Portable version of Jarte - dont forget to install the MS Word File Converters or Jarte will not be able to open MS Word files.

    "BEWARE!!!!!"

    May 24, 2013   |   By lag55zert

    Version: Jarte 5.0

    Pros

cannot get passed the adware issue to rate the program.

    Cons

This file comes packaged with a surreptiously hidden adware SeetIM which changes the home page, default search engine and also adds an unwanted toolbar. The toolbar is is tought to remove, use Revo Uninstaller. You have been warned. Shame on CNET for allowing this.

    Summary

    Dont' download.

"A Great Unique and 100% Fully Functional Word Processor"

    February 09, 2013   |   By Imogen7Ryan

    Version: Jarte 4.5

    Pros

Jarte is completely different to most Word Processors. It has a very clean interface without all the complex and hardly ever used features of the more popular ones. Yet it does everything that you would ever need it to do. Its layout is so different which makes it extremely unique and a joy to work with. Plus its document formats are compatible with any office word processor. It really is great.

    Cons

For me, there are no cons to this word processor.

    Summary

Jarte is so unique in its layout and is still very simple to use. It focuses more on content rather than having a huge ribbon at the top with so many confusing functions. But despite that, it has all the functionality that anyone could possibly need from a Word Processor.

Because of its uniqueness, some people may find it a bit of a surprise when they first use it. But I would say, take a look, familiarize yourself with it and then decide if it's for you.

Overall, it is a very good and welcome change to what's out there already.

"Wow Jarte leaves Wordpad in the dust."

    January 15, 2013   |   By arealniceguy

    Version: Jarte 4.5

    Pros

It may be based on the wordpad engine but it is what Microsoft should have given us. AND... If you want a feature it does not have you can contact Jarte support. If it is a good feature they may put it in a future upgrade. Try getting in touch with Microsoft about a feature you think would be an inprovement and unless thousands of other people are also asking for it they will probably not include it, or it will be years before in is included. Also Microsoft wants you to upgrade to their expensive Microsoft Word, not like a free program so much you only need it. If you do need a little more power in your word processor you can upgrade to Jarte's Plus version for just a few dollars instead of the hundreds Word costs.

The other word processors I use have so many features that I only use about ten percent of them and sometimes I have to search through large multi-page menus to find what I want.

    Cons

It doesn't have all the fancy bells that Microsoft Word has so if you're used to using Word you may find a feature you miss. Then again you might just contact Jarte support and find they are going to be including that feature in the future. Also by looking in the FAQs you might find they have it, but get there in a different way than you are used to.

    Summary

I have been using it for a while now and although I have several other word processors that I use, I find that I am using Jarte more and more due to it's simplicity. It just works!

    "Jarte is the best."

    September 08, 2012

    Version: Jarte 4.5

    Pros

    Easy to use and skinnable.

    Cons

None that I can think of.

    Summary

I have been using Jarte since version 2.x and have never had any problems. The fact that it saves in RTF by default is just fine with me, in fact, I prefer it.
