    "Good value, useable, works."

    December 27, 2006   |   By filthmonger

    Version: Image for DOS 1.98

    Pros

Simple interface, supports legacy systems. Offers byte for byte comparison. Partly scriptable. Creates bootable CD/DVD media.

    Cons

Lack of partition tools, does not warn of partition creation when restoring up. Needs more doco on CD/DVD return codes. Nested Causeway Dos Extender fails for various reasons not documented in FAQS. Needs compression stats, cd/dvd speed prediction. May assume UDMA2 or DMA33 when only PIO4 at 16Mb/s may be available.

    "Superb DOS-based imaging/backup solution"

    September 05, 2005   |   By dadams21

    Version: Image for DOS 1.92

    Pros

The free trial is not, as ronnieD said in an earlier review, crippled. There's no installation - just copy the program (image.exe) to a bootable DOS floppy disk. It may also be run from a bootable CD.

Do as johnnyvelvet suggested: be sure to read the docs. Image for DOS is a DOS program. If you're not familiar with how to create a proper bootable DOS floppy disk, a "makedisk" utility is available from Terabyte's web site - click on the "free software" link. If you find DOS too daunting, it's probably best to look elsewhere. Terabyte's Image for Windows is a good place to start, is bargain-priced and as a bonus, Image for DOS is included.

Veterans of image backup software will appreciate all IFD has to offer. It will image your system disk from outside Windows, the only sure way to guarantee that you have a valid backup. It supports more devices than most (perhaps all) image backup programs. Backups may be saved to FAT, FAT32, NTFS and Linux partitions as well as CD or DVD. External drives connected to a USB or Firewire interface are also supported. IFD is the only DOS image program I know of that supports Firewire.

IFD is also very fast when using the "BIOS HD direct" option. On my system it backed up a partition with 8 gigs of data to another internal hard drive in just over 8 minutes. The same partition was backed up to an external USB 2.0 hard drive in just over 11 minutes. These are very impressive times. At under $20, Image for DOS is a steal. Don't expect anything fancy, but you will get a solid and versatile backup program that is updated often.

    Cons

It's a DOS program, so it's going to stump people not used to DOS. These days, that's probably the vast majority of users.

Also (because it runs from DOS), you must reboot the system to do your backups. Still, it takes very little time and home users probably shouldn't be doing other stuff on the system when doing a backup anyway.

    "Compact and easy to use"

    May 12, 2005   |   By Viking Man

    Version: Image for DOS 1.86

    Pros

Very compact and easy to use partition imager and restorer. Inconvenient though because you have to reboot your PC to create a partition image - better to pay a bit more and get Image for Windows so you can image without rebooting. Image for Windows includes Image for DOS anyway, and is better value.

    Cons

The latest version on the Terabyte web site is 1.89 - later than the one here. Download the latest version from the Terabyte web site. This software is updated often. You cannot, or should not anyway, register the trial version of Image for DOS. When you purchase it you get a download link from which you download a full-license copy. You then register the full-license copy. The full license copy allows you to create bootable restore CD's so you can restore a partition image just by putting the image CD in the CD drive and booting from it.

    "Works as advertised"

    May 28, 2004

    Version: Image for DOS 1.36

    Summary

First off, the docs for this program are freely availlable at their website...read them. As per the docs, you must have an atapi (ide) cd burner to back-up to cd. That aside, the program is great! It backs-up/restores everything, even the mbr! I copied the two main program files to a winme startup disk and backed-up a win98 machine with it, wiped the hard drive, then resored win98! Please note: you cannot resore a larger drive to a smaller one, and if you resore a smaller one to a larger one you will need to resize the partition afterward if you want to fill the whole drive.

    "poor detection of cdrw drives"

    April 04, 2004

    Version: Image for DOS 1.36

    Summary

I wasted my money on this piece of garbage and come to find out it could not detect my usb cdrw drive.

The reason you can't even use the program until you buy it is because of its poor driver compatability. Don't even consider buying it.
    Use Norton Ghost instead!
