ID Theft Calculator from White Sky is a free utility that scans your PC and assesses your vulnerability to online identity theft, a growing problem. It's linked to the publisher's ID Vault online financial identity protection service, which isn't free.
ID Theft Calculator is simplicity itself; just a wizard that scans your computer for personal data, especially financial data, and passwords, account numbers, and other potentially compromising information. It displays the results of the scan on a colorful graph representing your risk of online identity theft, and it offers a link to learn about what you can do to protect yourself. What it recommends is a subscription to ID Vault.
Like most free downloads designed to sell you a paid version of trial-limited software, ID Theft Calculator basically will tell you where you're vulnerable to identity theft, but it won't do anything about it. To actually secure your identity by securing your stuff, you'll need to pay for an online data protection service like the publisher's ID Vault. However, if ID Theft Calculator identifies vulnerabilities in your system, you may want to take steps to protect yourself. The cost in time alone of dealing with identity theft makes the price of a good security package seem small in comparison, but when you consider what it could cost you if cyber criminals were to gain control of your accounts, good protection seems like a bargain.
ID Theft Calculator may be teaseware, but you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain by using it.
