"Thirteen years later-- it is still fun."

Pros

Exploring the different battlegrounds can be as much fun as accomplishing the missions. Likewise, you fly in different aircraft for various missions-- sometimes severely outmatched and sometimes you have the edge (except for the Red Baron-- who is brutal).

Your opponents have varying AI skill levels, and this adds to game play and options for replay. For example, can you defend your wing-man and still complete the mission or must you write him off?

Should you take out the antiaircraft, or just come in low and fast? The best solution to completing a mission will depend upon your skills.

Slaloming through the viaduct was not only good flying practice but a good way to weed out your lessor opponents who lacked the skill to follow.

If I recall, once you complete the final, insanely difficult, mission, you can play using unlimited ammo and bullet-proof which made it fun for my, then, elementary school age son as well.

Cons

The demo version is but a small taste of what lies within.

You'll want to dig out an old joystick for the most precise flying as the mouse play is much harder to control.

Summary

I bought the license to unlock the full version of the game back in 2000 and just ran across it in an archive, so installed and played on my more modern machine I am glad I did-- it is still fun.

The scenery, the music, and the game play are all excellent.

"One of a kind..."

September 18, 2002

 |  Version: Not Found

Summary

This game, has but one flaw, which is excusable, and that it is the licence imposed upon the technology. Radar hadn't been invented, there were no rockets in WWI and the bomber-payloads are excessive (if WWI planes were bombers it'd be a man sitting in the back physically dropping the one or two that it could carry)! Although this is a bit suss, the game is far better for it. The one thing that makes this game great though is the fact that you are as vulnerable as your opponents. This game is absolute gold and with only those technological flaws, it's still far more realistic than other flight sims!
