I had a hard drive crash with a little Flash file that I had spent considerable time fiddling with. All I had was a remote, locked .swf file. I was able to grab that file, unlock it, decompile it and save it without a hitch. THANKS!! Now about the "ethics" of software that decrypts software. If you are trying to gain access to your own files, a tool like this is a valuable life saver. If you're using it to try to rip people off my question is this... is the software telling you to do this? Do you hear voices? Do you see spots? Just because some chump abuses a tool doesn't negate the incredible utility of a product like this or mean that it shouldn't be developed. This is the same weak argument that says any software that mails to more than one person at a time is spamware and the developer should be strung up by their thumbs. Like any other thing in life, it is the user that is ultimately responsible for their actions.

I have looked at about six (6) decompilers. The very best of them is called "IMPERATOR". Unhappily, it only runs on the Windows platform.

I opened a swf that I had authored with some hefty AS in the first 3 frames so I figured it was a good test for the demo. Much of the AS that is in the Flash file is missing, particularly when there are multiple functions declared within one frame. I think this app is a great tool and off to a good start, but without full AS support I can't really justify the cost. Hopefully in a future version though!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Gordon is a decompiler, meaning that you can reverse SWF movies (even import-protected movies) and browse scripts, frames, graphics, sounds, buttons, layers and symbols. In comparison, the Flash editor is limited to non-protected movies and flattens movies into a single layer, losing most scripts in the process. On the downside, the timeline is very slow and browsing a movie is more difficult than it should be. The reversed scripts are a bit buggy and requires some knowledge of actionscripts in order to make them run in your own code. The price is maybe a bit steep but overall, Gordon pays back by itself after a few uses and is very useful to explore how features are implemented without browsing through tutorials, expensive books and forums.
