Editors' Review

The Android version of Google's Chrome web browser is tailored to mobile browsing, giving you control over your browsing privacy, security, and data usage.

Sync browser information across platforms: Google's Chrome web browser can sync your browsing history, bookmarks, passwords, autofill, and other settings between the desktop and mobile versions of the browser. You can control what Chrome does and doesn't sync through the Settings window.

Avoid potentially malicious sites: In Chrome's privacy settings, you can turn on Safe Browsing to see a warning message before you navigate to a potentially dangerous site that Google suspects of containing malware or phishing.

Browse in private: By turning on Incognito mode, Chrome won't keep a record of your browsing history, cookies, or other site data. Be aware that your ISP, your company's IT department, and the websites you visit may, however, keep a record of your activities.

Reduce browsing data usage: Turn on Data Saver in Settings to direct much of your web traffic through Google servers that compress the data before being downloaded to your Android phone. Google says Data Saver doesn't work with secure pages or if you're using Incognito mode.

Download for later viewing: On a webpage, you can tap the downward-pointing arrow to download a site, image, audio, or video to view or listen to later. Find the content in your Downloads.

Manage mobile bookmarks: In addition to having access to your desktop bookmarks, the Android version of Chrome lets you create and manage mobile-only bookmarks for sites you use just on your phone, such as for a bus schedule.

Tabbed browsing: You can open a new tab by tapping the More menu in the top-right corner and then tap New tab. To access open tabs, tap the small square in the top-right corner with a number inside, which is displaying how many tabs you have open.

Translate foreign sites: Google's translation tools work with its mobile browser. When you navigate to a site in another language, you can translate the page into your language by tapping your language at the bottom of the screen. You can also choose another language for the translation, if you want.

About those tabs: While tabs in the Android version of Chrome are handy, they are a bit more work than the desktop version. It takes two taps to move to another tab, and the Android browser offers no way to reopen a closed tab, as you can with the desktop version.

Bottom Line

Chrome for Android does a nice job of bringing the goodness of Google's desktop browser -- including syncing, bookmarks, and translation tools -- to the small screen of your phone.
