Google Chrome Frame

Publisher's Description

From Google:

Google Chrome Frame is an early-stage open source plug-in that seamlessly brings Google Chrome's open web technologies and speedy JavaScript engine to Internet Explorer. With Google Chrome Frame, you can start using open web technologies - like the HTML5 canvas tag - right away, even technologies that aren't yet supported in Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8, and 9. You can also take advantage of JavaScript performance improvements to make your apps faster and more responsive.

What's new in this version: Version 18.0.1025.142 brings improvements to Canvas2D and WebGL functionality. This release brings better GPU-acceleration and also includes a software resterizer called SwiftShader.

"AWESOME. Drags IE6 kicking and screaming into 2011."

    October 18, 2011  |   By SeashoreCnet

    Version: Google Chrome Frame 14.0.835.202

    Pros

If you *have* to use IE6 (because of corporate edict or whatever), this NO-ADMIN download allows you to "update" your browser to the latest version of Chrome, running "inside" IE6. Kudos to Google for doing this and boo-hiss to Microsoft for poo-pooing Google's initiative.

    Cons

Uses more memory that IE6 alone but personally I don't care 'cos my work PC has memory to spare as well as a Core2Duo processor. Documentation is not all that great. Quite a lot of online doc's refer to previous incarnations of Chrome Frame (e.g. beta test, version(s) that need Admin priv's etc.) Took me a while to sort out how to get defined URLs to always load in Chrome Frame but leave all other URLs in IE6. A screen shot of the registry would have helped but maybe they couldn't do that in the documentation. Make sure you get the latest version of the docs at chromium.org.

    Summary

When asked about users running IE6, MS's answer was that users should "upgrade to IE8 or 9". Brilliant. But if your company doesn't allow that for whatever reason then you're stuck. Not any more. Shame on Microsoft for spreading falsehoods about how this could lead to more security problems. As if IE6 isn't a load of insecure crap anyway. This at least improves the situation immeasurably for those unable to move.
