CNET Editors' review
No matter what the reason, there are times when listening to an entire song is just too much. Free MP3 Cutter helps you slice off any unnecessary parts of an MP3 track you don't want. The program has no extras but does what it is supposed to do well.
This program's outdated layout isn't going to win it any awards. That does, however, mean it's easy to find the exact feature you're looking for. It's hard to say if that's a testament to how simple the layout is or how lacking the program is in the features department. Free MP3 Cutter is just that: an MP3 slicing program. It will let you pick any start point and end point for a track and will wipe the rest away. It keeps your original file intact, but it won't let you save in any format other than MP3. It won't add any effects or change anything about the part of the track you cut out either.
Don't mistake this program for a serious audio editor. If you're looking for a program like that, you'll have to keep searching. However, if you're looking to carve some excess bulk from a song, Free MP3 Cutter is a fine choice. It does exactly what you would expect it to, and does it without any hiccups.

"perfectly simple to use"
Version: Free MP3 Cutter 1.01
Pros
nothing to figure out.nothing to learn.load file, mark file, name it then save it.
Cons
screen shot could be larger.
Summary
finally.a program that does one very simple task without having to decode some geekhead's language.there are not several taskbars with squares and squares of pictures to guess at what they mean and do. i was able to take songs out of our last jam session in just a few minutes on the first try.didn't have to click a combination of buttons just to set a marker then a few more clicks only to see that it wasn't really a marker after all. there is no need for a "help" section or a tutorial that blows by every fancy skill known to man. no redos, undos, file menues, views menues,TOOL buttons! how nice to have a program that has a frustration level of absolutley zero.this program only cuts sections out of a larger file. if you want to change the volume or delete a section or insert,fade-in,fade-out or any other editing feature, forget it. this is probably the easiest program on earth. FINALLY!

"It works exactly as expected, though with few features"
Version: Free MP3 Cutter 1.01
Pros
*Quickly loads even large MP3s (at least 53MB/77 minutes)
*Simple cut marker selections
*Quickly creates single cuts
*Saves cuts as new files to preserve originals
*Plays original MP3 files as well as cut selections before cuttingCons
*Cut selections can only be made by moving the slider with the mouse (arrow keys do not work for finer movements)
*Only creates single file cuts at a time (not capable of batch processing)
*Only opens MP3 files
*Only saves cuts as MP3 files
*Final cut files are larger than the originalsSummary
I experienced none of the problems other reviewers have mentioned and had a flawless experience using the program. There were no other programs installed at the same time Free MP3 Cutter 1.01 was installed - I am always VERY careful when installing free software for these very issues - so I don't know what program 'outyoursnout' was reviewing, but it couldn't have been this one (unless the installer has been replaced in the past 23 days, he/she is probably talking about the CNET installer, which I always skip). 'Alex_Cobleigh' is right about the resultant files being larger than the originals though: my cut files were more than twice as big as the originals.
I have an audio book that is split into 12 MP3 files ranging from 61.5 minutes long to 76.75 minutes long (I have no idea why it was cut up that way originally) that I've been listening to while driving to and from work. My commute is shorter than any of the files, so I wanted to cut the tracks to shorter lengths. I was able to cut all 12 files (cutting each into three or four files, one cut after the other, taking several hours due to performing other tasks as well), into 20-minute files (plus several shorter files) with no crashing, no slowness, no "Register to continue" messages, or any other problems. My original 12 files are 569MB while the 40 smaller files are 1.28GB, though that may be from a change in bitrate to 227kbps (the original bitrate is unknown). -
"Not Free, won't uninstall fully."
Version: Free MP3 Cutter 1.01
Pros
It was advertised as free. It had a standard File/Open menu which brought up an MP3 from my local drive. I could set a start and end point for trimming.
Cons
The installation requires multiple questions to not load unrelated crapware on you system, and not takeover your home page. Answer YES on first decline, then NO on second decline, to not receive additional payload.
There was no way to actually cut the section of an MP3 file I was working on after I marked the trip points.
When I went to save my file to see if it would automatically trim off the unwanted section, I was taken to a registration page for a $19.95 yearly subscription fee.
When I ignored the registration, "Free MP3 Cutter" told me it would only save 50% of my MP3 till I paid them.Summary
This NOT free, and their use of an .org address is abuse of the DNS.

-
"makes too long of a file"
Version: Free MP3 Cutter 1.01
Pros

Cons
Cliped file saved was longer than the original file.
-
"Disappointing"
Version: Free MP3 Cutter 1.01
Pros
Works extremely well.. for about 20 min.
Cons
-Does not cut in measurements less than 1 min.
-When you listen to "selection" most of the time you try to slide the time bar, it skips to a random part you didn't select.
-For no reason at all, the Time slider stopped working completely.Summary
If you need to cut one song, it works fine, after a few times, it stops working.
-
"Simple! It does exactly what was promised."
Version: Free MP3 Cutter 1.01
Pros
Simple operation. Timing is working here as expected. Saves mp3 selection to mp3 format.
Cons
It would be great to see the timing of selection (e.g.: I have already 30 secs of selection - add some calculation).
Summary
Thanks a lot. It's among three mp3 cutters, only one listening my commands ;-)
-
