What's worse? Unreliable security or no security at all? That's the question posed by Folder Access Pro, an underpowered utility that claims to protect your data by locking your folders with a password. Compared to simple encryption programs, Folder Access Pro is very quick and very easy to use. You only have to right-click a folder in Windows Explorer to lock or unlock it without opening the main program window. However, Folder Access Pro doesn't encrypt the folder, and savvy users can hack the protection with several mouse clicks. They merely need to stop the program with any process-exploring utility, including Task Manager. At that point, locked folders are as good as open. Folder Access Pro scores points for its freeware price, and it might do for keeping out small children or clueless users, but it's very poorly suited to any situation wherein security really matters.

"Locked Files can be Unlocked Without the Password"

March 22, 2012  |  By andrewsarris04

 |  Version: Folder Access Pro 2

Pros

The only pros about this program is that yes it can lock your files and folders.

Cons

Protected files can be easily unlocked that too without entering a valid password.

Summary

Well yes with this tool you can lock and safeguard your files but JUST for a Moment. As the others users mentioned you can easily encrypt files and folders locked by this tool. Can you imagine even the renaming the file thing works too. If you ask me for an alternative for this program i would say go for the tool named Lock a folder. Works perfectly. To get this tool, visit: www.protectafolder.com

"DON'T USE THIS UTILITY!!!! It's a *S*C*A*M*!!!!!!!!!!!"

June 11, 2010  |  By ph0enix2003

 |  Version: Folder Access Pro 2

Pros

none, none

Cons

There is nothing secure about it

Summary

All this utility does is add a GUID to the folder name. It doesn't lock or encrypt anything. In order to see the files all you have to do is rename the "secure" folder and remove the GUID from the name. CNET should remove this utility from their downloads.
