For a free program, this multipurpose image tool strikes us as a good find. Although the main interface looks too cluttered with buttons at first glance, the three main windows are intuitive enough once get your bearings. FastStone Image Viewer for Windows boasts a nice default design, but you can customize it to your liking with several skins.
Clicking a thumbnail puts a larger view of the shot in the lower-left pane, and you zoom in simply by dragging the mouse around. Though its image-editing tools can't compete with those offered by a full-featured suite, there's still enough here to make a decent amount of tweaks to your shots. You can resize, crop, remove red-eye, and adjust color, brightness, and contrast. You'll also find a few simple effects and filters, including Lens, Waves, and Morphs. Other nifty features include multiple folder slide shows, batch cropping and Windows Vista support.
FastStone Image Viewer for Windows can batch-convert files into a number of popular image formats including GIF, BMP, PSD, and PNG, and the slide-show creator allows you to apply transitions, specify the interval between images, and add your own MP3s as a soundtrack. We can recommend this program to everyone but professional designers.

Pros: Have been using program for many years; it does everything I want of an image viewer. Have tried others, both paid and free, but none were equal to Fast Stone .

"It is my EVERY DAY tool for photo manipulation - GREAT!"
Pros: Full capability (excepting "layer" work) to do everything I need to handle my daily photo printing, modifying, storing, sharing...! Everything needed, laid out in a rational, easy to use interface. Batch processing is extremely thorough!
Cons: Understand that it does NOT DO "layer" work (which is best left to Photoshop..and is usually not needed on a daily basis..). But, the "canvas" and copy/paste features are a little weak.
Summary: The product combines the best approach: Every possible needed feature to manage photos is available on one handy screen. I urge everyone using it to donate a small sum to FASTSTONE.

"A superb, simple to use, graphics display program."
Pros: Lots of advanced features. Easily handles folders containing literally thousands of images. Easy navigation of your hard drives folder tree enabling sorting of pictures from folder to folder. Good sharp display of pictures.
Cons: Menu and sub menu text size can't be changed resulting in sometimes hard to read meus on HD displays. Can't change menu icon size.
Summary: I've had other graphics display and sort programs before and had problems with them crashing as my folders increased in size. As an amatuer photographer I have stored over 120 thousand pictures in 65 different folders. This program handles all my lo... read more >>
