Editors' Review

Facebook Messenger enables you to message, call, pay, and share your location with your Facebook contacts.

Quick setup: Upon launching Messenger for the first time, just confirm your account and phone number, and you're good to go. Anyone who has your phone number can now add you, but your phone number is never made public.

Easy messaging: In Messenger, click the Compose icon, search for your designated contact, and type a message. You can also take and send a new photo or share existing ones, a range of stickers, a voice recording, or a dynamic GIF. The native Apple Messages app is bare-bones by comparison.

Calling: The calling feature, which relies on Wi-Fi, is particularly useful if you are traveling internationally and don't want to pay roaming charges to call home. You can also HD video chat over cellular. In testing, call quality was good, not great.

Location sharing: You can share your location with friends, which is helpful if you're meeting them while out and about. In testing, this feature always pinpointed our location perfectly.

Quick payments: Click Payments under Settings to add your debit card. It's a good idea to add Touch ID or a PIN for better security. To make a payment, write a new message or open an existing one and click the ... button at bottom right. Click Payments, enter your amount, press Pay, and then enter your PIN or Touch ID, and you're done. The receiver only has to open the conversation and add their card to receive payment.

Payer protection: The Help Center includes plenty of privacy and security information about sending and receiving payments. Here are some highlights: When you send a payment, only your name, photo, and dollar amount are shared with your payee. You have to store your debit card to make or receive payments, but you can always remove it. Facebook claims that your financial info is stored "on secure servers with multiple layers of hardware and software protection," away from all of your other Facebook information. Turning on Login Approvals adds an additional layer of security, requiring a PIN code every time your account is accessed from a new device. If you notice anything suspicious in your payments history, contact Facebook's anti-fraud department, which according to Facebook is already monitoring phishy transactions.

Additional apps: There are over 50 extra apps that you can install via Facebook Messenger -- mostly photo and collaging apps -- to enhance your messaging experience.

Continuous sync: You don't have to add new contacts each time someone joins. Facebook will automatically add them to your contacts, so you can always see who's available to message.

Separate app: With space at a premium on our phone, it still annoys us that we have to have two Facebook apps.

Payment request: Unlike competitors such as PayPal, Venmo, and Google Wallet, Facebook Messenger doesn't allow you to request payments, only to send them.

Credit cards: Unlike PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, and Google Wallet, Facebook Messenger won't let you pay by credit card, only Visa and MasterCard debit cards.

Facebook only: Not everyone wants to be on Facebook. But if you want to be able to message or pay any of your contacts through Messenger, they need to be.

Bottom Line

Facebook Messenger is a great tool for messaging, HD calling, and location sharing. Its Payments feature is great, but we wish it also allowed payment requests and credit card payments. Whether or not you feel confident paying or receiving payments over the app depends on how much you trust Facebook's security promises.
