This small software application bypasses Windows search with a lightning quick interface and real-time results for all of the files and folders in your local hard drive or any subsection of it. The software doesn't do much more than search, but its efficiency, effectiveness, stability, and low system resource usage make it a keeper utility.
The software is split into two main controls: the search box and the results page. When you first run Everything, it will create an index of all the files and folders on your machine. Unless you have millions of files, the index will be created before you know it. Searching is done in real time, as you type--i.e. the search term "rad" returns 379 objects, "radio" returns 160, and "radiohead" returns 71, all instantly.
The results screen can display seven different fields: Name, Path, Size, Last Write Time, Creation Time, Last Access Time, and Attributes. Sorting by any field takes a little longer than searching, but only slows down noticeably when you sort more than 1,000 results.
Everything also lets users connect to HTTP, FTP, or ETP (Everything Transfer Protocol) servers to allow remote searches, but its functionality is mostly singular--searching your local PC very quickly with minimal resources, and it accomplishes that well. If you've never struggled with Windows search before, you might pass Everything by; if your computer is a disorganized mess with files all over the place, Everything might be a wonderful gift.
Publisher's description
From voidtools :Everything is a search engine for Windows that replaces the normal Windows search with a much faster one. Unlike Windows search, Everything initially displays every file and folder on your computer. You can type in a search filter to limit what files and folders are displayed. Everything only uses file and folder names and generally takes a few seconds to build its database. 1,000,000 files will take about 1 minute.

Version: Everything 1.2.1.371
"Great but doesn't integrate fully with Windows 7"
Pros: Brilliant fast and comprehensive indexing of files.
Cons: Unfortunately it's not fully functional in Windows 7 but it does index all files i.e. can't access files from the search results/index list but it tells you where the searched file is located.
Summary: Good for finding file location in Windows 7. In my previous XP operating system if performed magnificently.

"Fastest file indexer - Love simple interface!"
Pros: Very fast file indexing! It can index my 150GB C drive and my external 500GB (nearly full) in less than 30 seconds! It will not search inside files -- for me this is a plus.
Cons: None for me
Summary: This has simple interface but don't let that fool you, it can do complex searches as well. It can index my 150GB C drive and my external 500GB in less than 30 seconds! It will not search inside files -- for me this is a plus. I tried using Google... read more >>

"Much faster than Windows search"
Pros: Well I DLed it and tried it out and was impressed by the sheer speed of it. I only gave it a 4 because I haven't really drove it much yet, so I'm taking away a star just in case there is a bug I haven't come across yet.
Oh yeah, it's free!Cons: None so far.
Summary: I was skeptical at first, but I've always had good luck with cnet so I thought I'd give it a try....glad I did, you will be too.
