The iPhone has become a popular reading device for many of its millions of users. So, a good dictionary app is a must, especially if you also have installed newspaper, eBook, and blog reading apps. While there are paid as well as some free versions of many well-known dictionaries available in the app store, Dictionary Offline Free provides a number of options that are more than enough for most users. Easy to use and with clear instructions for how to download more dictionaries, save entries, and share them, Dictionary Offline Free is a great tool for anyone that needs to look up words on their phone.
Upon installation, Dictionary Offline Free has three menus: search, downloads and favorites. After initial installation, the app will prompt you to download at least one dictionary. It offers one free standard dictionary - the WordNet dictionary curated by Princeton - and a thesaurus of 23,500 English synonyms. Additional free dictionaries include bilingual dictionaries for English and French, German, Russian and Portuguese. While the initial app is free, a paid upgrade will also unlock Spanish, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Italian, Hebrew, Latin, Turkish, Vietnamese, Ukrainian, Hindi, Polish, Romanian, and Indonesian (27 total).
The dictionary is quick and easy to use with a very fast search function and the ability to add words as favorites, which we found exceptionally useful when using bilingual dictionaries. Just imagine having a list of the most important words bookmarked for reference when visiting Europe. Additionally, you can send a text message with a word to a friend or family member easily with your phone.
